| Greetings!
Happy Spring! Winter has come to an end, the days are growing longer, and nature is flourishing around us! In Virginia, all that snow and rain is making this a very green spring. The birds are beginning to exhibit their mating behaviors and we are anxiously awaiting those first hummingbirds! What better time to talk about LIVING well?

Live with Abundance!
Living with abundance is quite different from living for abundance. When we live for abundance we go about gathering, collecting, and wanting more in the way of material things, and we never seem to have acquired enough. When we live with abundance we are serene in the knowledge that all we have is all we ever need. I offer this month's lesson from a very small teacher. The black-capped Chickadee is one of the cutest little birds and a master at Living with abundance. He comes to my window and perches precariously on a small branch. I notice that his little feathered suit has no pockets in which to store any seed for tomorrow. He holds on despite the strong winds that are trying their hardest to dislodge him, and the steady rain falling around him. He devotes himself to living in the now, entertaining us with his joyful little tune and modeling the path I want to follow.
The key to living in the now is learning to let go of the regrets of yesterday and the worries about tomorrow. Dale Carnegie encouraged us to "live in day-tight compartments," meaning we have to learn to handle only the challenges of today, leave yesterday behind, and not borrow any worries about what the future might hold. Speaking of living in the present, nobody does it better than our little Chickadee. Through a process known as neuronal replacement, some small birds like the Chickadee allow neurons containing old information to die, replacing them with new neurons so they can adapt to changes in their environment. Once a neuron contains a long-term memory, it is permanently altered, and is no longer usable in new-memory formation. Research conducted by Cornell and Rockefeller University shows that Chickadees switch from an insect diet to a seed diet in the fall, allowing them to replace more neurons, generate new song lyrics, and remember new food caches. New studies and information by thought leaders like Wayne Dyer, Byron Katie, and Daniel Amen encourage us to change our way of thinking in order to change what (and how) we think. If a small bird can do it, we can too. And no, you don't have to learn to eat insects or seeds!
Living with Chaos
We live in a world where the only constant is change. Many times the need to change blindsides us and we resist it bitterly. Change often comes about in chaotic conditions. The current economy is a great example. Many organizations and their employees are, and have been, living with chaos, trying to cope and somehow survive. Springtime is another example of chaos, and another opportunity to learn from Mothern Nature and the birds. In Northern Virginia, seventy-degree days can easily become twenty-degree nights. Sunny mornings give way to stormy afternoons and winds seem to come out of nowhere. When the weather gets dramatic, I often worry about my little feathered friends, and how they'll survive. I've watched closely and I believe that they learn to bend when they can, and to take shelter from the storms when necessary. They give shelter by huddling together. The very best way for you to survive your own chaos (this month and always) is to find a wing to crawl under, and to be a wing to crawl under. It only takes a moment to stop by someone's desk and offer a word of encouragement or just a friendly ear. Remember this quote and pass it on to those who need to hear it:
"Courage does not always roar. Sometimes courage is the small, quiet voice at the end of the day saying, 'I will try again tomorrow.'" - Author Unknown
Live Young!
The key to staying young no matter what your age is to live young! Living young starts with your attitude and continues with your actions. Living young actions include being playful, curious, inquisitive, imaginative, creative, joyful, enthusiastic, and flexible. Take another cue from the birds. Get outside and watch their springtime behavior: They eat with abandon, they chase each other about, they're busy investigating every nook and cranny, they're gathering nesting materials, and soon they'll be having babies. On second thought, some of you may want to forget I said that......
Have a fabulous month and I'll be back in May with another little lesson for life's journey.
Make this your best April ever!

5 & 1/2 Ways to Enjoy April!
1) Play in the Dirt - Get outside and get dirty! April is a great time to plant flowers, start some vegetables and feel the earth coming back to life.
2) Enjoy the Wind - Instead of cursing those windy days, let your yourself really feel it and enjoy it! Let it blow on you face, your neck, and if you're really brave, on your belly! Go ahead, I double-dog dare you!
3) Have a Picnic - Do it now while the ants, mosquitoes, and other bugs aren't looking. Pack some childhood favorites and skip the calorie counting for just one day.
4) Celebrate Arbor Day - You don't have plant a tree (although I wish you would) to celebrate. Take a walk and hug all the trees in your neighborhood or park. If anyone stares at you, just grin and tell them you're celebrating Arbor Day! Don't wait until April 30th, celebrate all month long! 5) Take a virtual trip - When April showers come your way, go online and enjoy a virtual walk. Research National Parks and query what kinds of trees grow there, and make a list of as many trees as you can find. I'll send a gratitude journal to the person who emails me the longest list of trees, I promise! The deadline to submit is Arbor day, April 30th.
And the 1/2, you ask? Practice Gratitude! Keep a journal and list 5 things that you have to be grateful for every day. Always stay in gratitude. We have sooo much to be grateful for. If you can't list 100 things to be grateful for, let me know and I'll send you mine!
