Dear Friends,
Everywhere I go, I hear warnings and discussions about the spread of the seasonal flu and that new threat this year, H1N1, also known as Swine Flu. With twin granddaughters just weeks away from entering this world, I'm taking all the precautions I can.
But what I find fascinating is how little concern we seem to give to the viruses that attack our minds every day. Those viruses are the negative thoughts that go unchecked and seriously jeopardize our health, relationships, careers, and happiness. This may sound like an exaggeration, but let's examine some facts.
First consider the sheer volume of negative thoughts we have in any given day. Estimates place the number of thoughts we have each day at 40 to 60 thousand, and 80% are thought to be negative! Where do they come from? Here's some new research on the subject. In his book, Virus of the Mind, Richard Brodie describes a memetic, or meme (rhymes with beam), as "a thought, belief, or attitude in your mind that can spread to or from other minds." So mind viruses are not spread by sneezing, like the flu, but they do spread, and once in your mind they can affect behavior. Think of some limiting and negative beliefs you have picked up from parents, teachers, and co-workers over the years. Here are some that might be familiar: "Our family has always been poor (or overweight, or unlucky)." "The economy has destroyed our business, there is no sense in advertising or making sales calls right now." "There is waste in our manufacturing process, but it just can't be helped, it's always been there." Can you see how these negative thoughts help us to acquire the excuses that keep us from succeeding and enjoying the happiness that is our birthright?
Just as you're infected by these viruses, you can disinfect yourself by choosing to think differently. First notice your negative thoughts. Then, simply exchange the negative thought with its positive counterpart. "I'm stupid" becomes "I'm smart and resourceful." "I'm broke and in debt" becomes "I have an infinite source of abundance." Sound impossible? Here is some powerful advice on changing unwanted thoughts and behaviors from the much-loved author Mark Twain: "Habit is habit, and not to be flung out the window....but to be coaxed downstairs a step at a time."
Continued Success and Abundance!

On the Subject of Gratitude:
"Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos into order, confusion into clarity.... It turns problems into gifts, failures into success, the unexpected into perfect timing, and mistakes into important events. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow." - Melody Beattie, author of Gratitude:Inspirations
What better time of year to reflect on the proven benefits of gratitude?
Here is some information from the Health Leader, an online wellness magazine:
"Psychologists Robert Emmons at the University of California at Davis, and Michael McCullough, at the University of Miami, are researchers in field of gratitude. What they have learned so far is that gratitude is really, really good for you.
Participants who kept gratitude lists were more likely to have made progress toward important personal goals (academic, interpersonal, and health-based). Young adults who practiced a daily gratitude intervention (self-guided exercises) had higher levels of alertness, enthusiasm, determination, attentiveness, and energy compared to the group that focused on life's hassles.
There is evidence that when we practice bringing attention to what we appreciate in our lives, more positive emotions emerge, leading to beneficial alterations in heart rate variability. This may not only relieve hypertension but reduce the risk of sudden death from coronary artery disease.
An example of practicing gratitude is volunteering to help others in return for having been helped. As an experience, it is felt in the same frontal regions of the brain that are activated by awe, wonder, and transcendence. From these cortical and limbic structures come dopamine and serotonin, the chemicals for feeling good inside. Gratitude, then, can be a total body experience and beyond - meaning the deepest and widest gratitude comes from the soul and that part of the brain - the amygdala - that registers "soul" experiences.
So when we look at snow-capped peaks or golden swatches of changing aspen or the Milky Way at night from high in the Rockies, our souls sing and our bodies are suffused with streams of dopamine and serotonin, the gifts of gratitude. In short, feeling gratitude and appreciation on a regular basis helps heal us at every level of our being."

Maryanne's Suggestion: Keep a gratitude journal!
Buy yourself a blank notebook and make a commitment to write down at least five things you have to be thankful for each day. Include snapshots of loved ones, quotes that you lift your spirits. Do this for at least 30 days and watch your whole attitude shift. You're likely to experience greater success at work, better health, peak performance in exercise and business, a higher sense of well-being. You will most likely begin to think of gratitude as so much more than just a Thanksgiving word!
