Dear Friends,

I hope you're not one of those people who seem to have fallen into the doldrums I've begun to refer to as the "Mental Recession".

It seems that some folks are using the slump in the economy to give themselves a holiday from creativity, personal development and continuous improvement.  I can't help but think that this is the worst possible time to give yourself permission to take a holiday from following your dreams and reaching your goals.

Let's talk about dreams and goals.  Everyone has dreams, but few people convert those dreams into specific goals and action steps for achievement.  I'm telling you this, knowing that until a year ago, I was one of those people who had goals, but never saw the need to write them down.  Since then I've become a fan of what is sometimes referred to as SMART goals setting.

I'll describe what SMART goals are in more detail below, but for now let's talk about whyyou need them.

Zig Ziglar, my favorite motivational speaker, tells us that people with specific and written goals are less stressed, perform better, show more self-confidence, are happier and more satisfied. Almost everyone would agree that they want to achieve more and have less stress, don't you think?

But I must be a slow learner, because even after listening to Ziglar repeat this for 20 years, I still resisted putting my goals into writing.  Then one day last August I decided I had nothing to lose and every thing to gain. See, I've always prided myself on my persistence and my ability to achieve whatever I set out to do.  But since I started putting my goals in writing, I find that I achieve them faster, and I begin working on another much sooner than I  ever did before.  Before I began writing my goals out, I kidded myself into believing that I could stay on target with my goals without committing them to paper.  But I was kidding myself. It was all too easy to overlook certain goals or to convince myself that I was still on track or even that a certain goal wasn't so urgent.  Having it spelled out in writing, makes my intentions clearer.   I hope I can convince you not to make the same mistake I made!

If you have a dream, put it in writing, set a  goal and a date for accomplishment, and commit to doing something each day to make it come true.  Then watch amazing things start to happen in your life!

What are SMART Goals?

A well stated goal meets the following criteria:

Specific
Measurable
Attainable
Realistic
Timely

A specific goal clearly defines what you intend to accomplish.  For example, stating "I want to read more" is not as specific as stating "I will read one book per month, completing 12 books by June 30, 2010.

Measurable means that you can track your progress against the stated goal, and keep yourself on track.  Using our example above, at the end of each month, progress towards the 12 book goal could be easily charted.

Attainable goals are those that are challenging and within your reach with a sustained effort.  Using the example above again, it might not be achievable to have set the goal to read 12 books this month, unless you were housebound and could really devote the time necessary to reach the goal.

Realistic means that the goal is not too easy, nor is so difficult that it appears impossible. For example, I might want to reduce my intake of white sugar and the empty calories that go along with sugary sweets. But to swear them off for life isn't very realistic since I love dessert!  Setting an unrealistic goal sets us up for failure and the accompanying feelings of shame and blame.  It makes much more sense to set a goal to limit sweets to special occasions or to replace one sweet item a day with something healthier, like fruit.

Timely goals put an end in sight and gives us a clear target to reach.  If the target is vague or too far into the future, we become complacent, have no sense of urgency and eventually lose our desire to achieve it.

I hope you will use the SMART guidelines and set goals for 4 areas of your life: your health, success,  relationships and your personal development.  Keep a journal and track your progress. When you start achieving more than you ever imagined, drop me a line, so I can help you celebrate!

Have a great month
and stay cool!
