September Lawn Fertilization is most important

We have received several questions regarding a previous article we sent via email regarding drought-stressed lawns. In that article, emailed August 3, we answered a question about applying fertilizer to a "crunchy" brown lawn:

"Should you fertilize? NO (NO) Applying a high Nitrogen lawn food stimulates vegetative growth. If soil moisture is limited or unavailable, it just doesn't make sense to try to promote foliar growth until conditions are more favorable, like perhaps in late September of October."

Just a brief note of clarification needed here: fertilizer alone will not make a stressed lawn turn lush and green. It could actually do more harm than good. Cool season turfgrasses thrive in cooler temperatures and require ample soil moisture, enabling them to utilize the fertilizer you apply.

Well, thankfully, that hot dry weather seems to have passed and many lawns are showing renewed signs of life. Unless your lawn is totally dead, NOW is the time to feed it. The cooler weather and recent rains have provided just what your cool-season turfgrass needs, and we are entering the time of year when root growth is at its maximum.

September is the right time to apply a high-nitrogen fertilizer, like Fertilome Lawn LawnFood+Iron food + Iron, and it is also the best time to overseed areas that have low turf density. In fact, both Purdue and the University of Illinois suggest that the September fertilization is the most important feeding of the year for cool season turfgrasses.

So, do yourself and your lawn a big favor and FEED IT.
Plan to fertilize your lawn now and again just before Thanksgiving and your turf will be much thicker and more lush next spring, which will really help minimize crabgrass and other weeds in 2013. Don't wait..... DO IT NOW!!

Hey! I've got Dandelions blooming in my yard right now. What should I do?

It should come as no surprise that many plants were confused by this crazy year, and your Dandelions are no exception. Only a few Dandelions will produce flowers this late in the season, and all Dandelions, and other broadleaf lawn weeds are still manufacturing food (= energy) through photosynthesis. That energy is now headed toward the root system where it is stored for winter. If you want to achieve excellent control of Dandelions, NOW is the time to apply broadleaf weed killers, like Fertilome WeedOut or SpeedZone. The photosynthetic food is already headed for the roots right now, and that is precisely where you want the herbicide to go, so it kills the weed, roots and all.

We recommend application of liquid herbicides to ACTIVELY GROWING WEED FOLIAGE. You should expect to see twisting and curling of weed leaves within 24 hours of application, which indicates the beginning of the end of the weed. We can tell you which product will work best to control those unwelcome weeds in your lawn, but don't delay: the best time of the entire year to control broadleaf lawn weeds is RIGHT NOW!!
