Greetings!

Fall is certainly upon us, and just as the animals are preparing for Winter, we need to do some things to prepare our landscapes for a successful "Winter's Nap".

PrescriptionFall Prescriptions for Gardens
This is an ideal time to feed, lawns, trees, and shrubs; and we offer several products to provide the essential nutrients for just about any plant.

Tree and Shrub Food
Fertilome Tree and Shrub Food:  Apply as needed, twice a year - Spring and Fall.
A scientifically formulated  food that contains penetrating action, which moves the food directly to the feeder roots when applied around the tree or shrub drip line, eliminating the need to dig holes.
Great for all types of trees and shrubs including shade trees, nut trees, Evergreens, citrus, tropical and flowering trees.
Holly Tone

Holly-tone:  Especially for acid-loving plants.  Apply twice yearly - Spring and Fall.
Use half the recommended rate in the Fall application. If the area to be fed is mulched, it is preferable to remove the mulch, feed and then restore the mulch on top of the plant food. If this is not possible, double all recommended feeding rates.  Excellent for Rhodos, Azaleas, Dogwoods, and Evergreens.

Fertilome Winterizer:  Apply in later Fall.Winterizer

Fall feeding is one of the most critical feeding times for the lawn. A healthy and stable plant can endure the hardship of winter better than a weak plant. Winterizer builds winter hardiness, stem strength and disease resistance in lawns, trees and shrubs.

Dutch Bulb FoodHi-Yield Dutch Bulb Food: Use at planting time in Fall and again in Spring.

Specifically designed to be used with all types of flowering bulbs and to help them flourish like they do in the fertile soils of Holland.  Provides primary nutrients for proper root development and to grow big, beautiful flowers.

The doctor also prescribes tree wrap for any recently planted trees with smooth or thin bark, like Maples, Honeylocust, or Cherries. It protects the bark from frost-crack, which is caused by exposure to direct sunlight on cold days. The wrap is applied after we have had at least one frost and the leaves have begun to drop.  Be sure to remove it by June 1 next year. When you pick up your tree wrap be sure to ask for our free sheet of instructions for applying it.

And while you're at it, you might want to pick up some Wilt-Stop for your broad-Wilt Stopleaved evergreens like Rhododendrons and Azaleas. It is used to reduce moisture loss when drying winter winds or bright sunlight strike the leaves (and the ground is frozen so that the roots cannot replace the plant's moisture).  This can cause severe wilting or shock and even the demise of your plants.

And for protection from hungry deer, rabbits, voles, etc. we have two excellent choices - either Liquid Fence or Plantskydd Repellents

Don't forget to thoroughly water your evergreens just before the ground freezes and you put away your hoses.  This will provide them with some reserves to help get through those blustery winter days when they cannot retrieve any moisture from the frozen soil.
