Master Class Instructor - Joni Falk - Landscape

Emerging - Joni Falk
Emerging Sunlight  10"x 10" Oil
"Working from a photo, I will demonstrate my way of creating a stronger painting by sharing my method of incorporating dramatic lighting effects, as well as how I am able to direct the viewer to the local area. Creating a mood and telling a story are elements for a better, more compelling painting."

Joni has more than 35 years teaching experience. Her work has been featured in Southwest Art, Art of the West, and American Artist. Her work is included in the permanent collections of the Desert Caballeros Museum. She is represented by Legacy and Settlers West. See more here.

Master Class Instructor - Linda Tippetts - Landscape "en plein air"

"During the demonstration, I will emphasize how to lay out the composition and keep it fluid. I will also show the importance of good drawing, no matter the subject. Simplifying middle tones will be stressed in order to relate to the lightest lights. Take your time to see all the components such as how nature or any subject translates to color. The painting will naturally finish itself as you begin to understand these points.

Linda Tippetts is one of Montana's best plein air painters. See more of her work here.

Master Class Instructor - Stephanie Birdsall - Still Life

Birdsall Soft Light
Soft Light, Pastel, National Arts Club Award Winner.

"I will demonstrate how to work with pastel the same way I work with oils. My approach is based on a limited pastel palette based on Richard Schmid's oil palette. It involves layering and a very light touch. It's about mixing as opposed to using many different colors. This technique is perfect for plein air as well as studio. I will work with a still life that includes flowers."

Birdsall received her training at the City and Guilds of London Art School and has exhibited widely throughout the years. She has won many coveted awards. See more here.

Master Class Instructor - Kim Casebeer - Landscape

"I will be painting a plein air demo on location at Stephanie Birdsall's studio in Tucson. I love long distance views with atmospheric perspective, and there are many magnificent scenes from this location. As any plein air painter knows, mother nature will have a hand in the decision."

Kim Casebeer is from a fourth generation farm family and has felt a connection to the landscape for a long time. Whether painting  mountains or plains, Kim's goal is to capture the quality of the light and atmosphere that draws her to a location. First and foremost, it's about having an emotional connection. Kim travels throughout the western US painting plein air studies for use in larger works.

Master Class Instructor - Carol Swinney - Palette Knife Painting

Carol Swinney
Autumn Journey 11x14 Oil on Canvas

"I will be demonstrating how my style of painting a landscape with palette knives differs from a brush painting. I will be showing how I "sculpt" the paint, starting with the sky and/or distant mountains and then work my way to the foreground. I will also be showing a lot of knife handling techniques that are effective in portraying different textural areas of the landscape."

Carol Swinney paints with a palette knife exclusively for many reasons, mostly for her love of texture. She has received many awards over the years and was recently featured in the 2010 January issue of Southwest Art. See more here.

Master Class Instructor - Donna Howell Sickles - Figurative

Texas artist, Donna Howell Sickles, was charmed by an vintage postcard, circa 1935, when she was a junior at Texas Tech. The postcard image depicted a cowgirl seated atop a horse with a caption that read, "Greetings from a Real Cowgirl from the Ole Southwest." Donna was attracted instantly by the confidence of the woman in the image and set out to incorporate this type of image into her own artwork.

This Cowgirl icon soon became the central theme of her mixed media compositions which include paper and canvas with a mix of charcoal, pastel, and acrylic. See more here.

Master Class Instructor - Star Liana York - Figurative Sculpture

Star York blessing wa ywoman
Blessingway 6' x 3'

"In my demonstration, I will be working on a Native American figurative sculpture in clay which will cast in bronze at a later date. My focus will be on expression as reflected in face, hands, and body gesture. I will also demonstrate and discuss the techniques of how to achieve this in sculpting."

Star Liana York tells the story of her own discoveries through her art. While her career as a professional sculptor began over twenty years ago, much of the recognition she has achieved comes from a body of work created after moving to the Southwest in 1985. This collection reflects her introduction to the Western narrative and native peoples of the area, as well as her inspiration that comes from raising and training quarter horses, and experiencing wildlife and unique rock art.

In the tradition of American Art of the West, her work succeeds in capturing authentic aspects of the past and interpreting historic figures with convincing realism.  See more here:

Master Class Instructor - Gay Faulkenberry - Landscapes

Gay Falkenberry
Heirloom Pumpkins  oil on canvas

"My workshop will include a demonstration and cover the basics of painting "en Plein Air." Emphasis will be on capturing the beauty of natural light, value and color relationships and their importance in creating the feeling of time, place, and mood in your painting. In addition, I will present a short introduction to my palette and how I use those colors in my mixtures."

Oklahoma artist, Gay Faulkenberry, was raised throughout the west and has traveled widely in Europe. Luminous color made an imprint on her, while she worked in watercolors during her childhood and into her college years. Faulkenberry later transitioned to oils after studies with Sergei Bongart. See more here.
