July 2012
Hiya, friends!

South Beach, Leland.  Friday, July 6th 2012.

Wow, where has the time gone?  It's already the middle of July--and we couldn't have planned a more perfect summer.  I'm still very much on track with my personal goal of swimming in Lake Michigan every day between Memorial Day and Labor Day--the tally is now over 50 jumps!  You can check out the daily photo on the blog http://www.swimlakemichigan.com/the-daily-swim.  The local produce has been way, way ahead of schedule--the peaches have been for sale at the local farm stands for almost a full week!  My husband Curt and I are preparing to pick sweet corn over the weekend to fill our farm stands.  (Beginning tomorrow, Curt's Corn can be found at NJ's Grocery in Lake Leelanau, Sonny's Farm Stand on M-22, Hansen Foods in Suttons Bay, Price's Farm Stand on M-204 and Cedar Sol Farm right here in Cedar.)

And as far as knitting goes....

The second half of summer is now upon us and it's time to think a little bit about the upcoming season: Fall.  (The time we knitters dream of!)  While we still have plenty of time for fun at the beach and in our gardens, here at Wool & Honey, we're preparing for the cooler weather by bringing you several ideas over the next few weeks.  August will be a busy month here at the shop, filled with trunk shows (read more about Stone Sock Fibers below), classes and new kits for babies, accessories and home decor.  I have to admit, while I've enjoyed my free time this summer, I'm feeling like a kid who's ready to go back to school.  Time to hit the books--er, knitting!  Look for an email next week, where we'll outline the wooly season here at Wool & Honey.

Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow at the trunk show from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.--you won't want to miss it!

Fibre Company Trunk Show
that's tomorrow!
Saturday, July 21st 2012
10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

We're so excited to announce a very special Fibre Company trunk show with some of the industry's most exquisite yarns and patterns.  For one day only, we'll have some gorgeous samples for display (and special order) as a "warm-up" (or would that be "cool-down" for the long season of handknits ahead.

You'll be able to try each and every sample on (which include sweaters, shawls and hats) and we'll have color cards available in a dizzying range of hues.  Select from sumptuous fiber blends and classic styles for your first fall project.  We'll be placing your special orders for exactly the colors and fibers you want beginning on Monday, July 23rd.

This trunk show will also stand as both a "sneak preview" and a trial run for new fall yarns and patterns...we want to hear your thoughts on these styles and yarns before we stock our shelves for fall.

Amy Tyler and Stone Sock Fibers Trunk Show
Friday, August 3rd
5-9 p.m.
&
Saturday, August 4th
10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Wool & Honey is pleased to announce that Amy Tyler, from Lake Ann, Michigan (DBA Stone Sock Fibers), will have her yarns, knitted items, and knitting patterns for sale at Wool & Honey, August 3 -4.  An artist's reception will kick off the weekend on Friday evening from 5-9 with wine and handmade treats, and we'll continue the show on Saturday from 10 to 4.

Amy is a truly accomplished handspinner and handknitter, well known for her teaching of spinning and knitting throughout the midwest and beyond and for her contributions to Spin-Off magazine.  And this October, she will be one of the featured mentors at Spin-Off Autumn Retreat in Tahoe City, California.

She spins with the knitter in mind.  Among her handspun yarns you can expect the widest range.  She works with both luxury fibers (silk, cashmere, alpaca, mohair) and sturdy wools (Romney, Coopworth).  Some of her yarns are brilliantly flashy in saturated colors, while others are subdued in pastels and shades; you'll also find natural colors of fiber in her yarns.  She spins yarns from the finest lace-weight to the thickest bulky; from the classic and sturdy 2-ply to dramatic and highly textured yarns.  Regardless of the structure of her yarns, she always makes yarns that are stable, usable and long-lasting.

Her patterns are carefully written and detailed.  Among them you can find patterns for scarves, socks, hats, shawls, afghans, ponchos, jackets, and fingerless mitts.  At this trunk show, Amy will be introducing three new patterns:  "Cabled Wrists", a set of 4 fingerless mitt patterns; "Petite Poncho", a light, lacey, layering piece that can be worn in a variety of ways; and "Right Side Up?", a jacket designed so that it can be worn right-side-up or up-side-down.  Many of the knitted items that she will have available are examples of her patterns.  Others are unique pieces, often knitted from her own handspun yarns.  In addition to knitting, Amy has recently begun weaving and she will have some of her recent woven pieces available.

You can find more information about Amy's work at her website, http://www.stonesockfibers.com and her blog,
