It's summer in Leelanau County--and what a wonderful time of year! This was the first week of summer vacation for all Northern Michigan schools, we've had strawberry sightings in the local grocery stores and the sunny days are at their longest. I am so lucky to call this place home!

Even though temperatures are getting warmer, don't forget about your knitting. Summer's a great time to pick up some lightweight projects--check out some of our suggestions for fun summer knitting below.....

Last week's World Wide Knit in Public Day was such a blast. Downtown Traverse City was fully "yarn bombed"--it was great to see trees, lampposts and drinking fountains covered with bright knitted and crocheted adornments. What a great way to bring about Fiber Awareness! We're on the calendar already for next year--Saturday, June 8th.

Summer is such an exciting time at the shop! New yarns, gifts and kits are trickling in every week--to prepare for Northern Michigan's busy summer season. Some of these treats will be making it to the website, but some of them are so unique that they won't. (It's too hard to manage some of this special inventory both online and in the retail shop.) Which means, of course, that you need to stop in to see these lovelies in person! You can also check out the blog for more periodic updates--it's a good way to see what we're up to on a day-to-day basis.

On a totally unrelated note, I've accepted a new challenge in my free time--a way to really immerse myself in the summer spirit. I've built a new website--and started another blog--to catalog my personal relationship with Lake Michigan. My goal is to swim in the Big Water every single day between Memorial Day and Labor Day--and so far, I'm right on track. The site can be found at: http://www.swimlakemichigan.com/. We even have a Facebook fan page and would love to have to join us (if you're into that sort of thing).

Arroyo. Arroyo is like the little brother of the popular Rios--it's soft, squishy and best of all, superwash. Perfect for medium-weight shawls, lightweight sweaters and easy-care baby knits. Find Malabrigo Arroyo here.

Finito. Is it wrong to have favorites? Because Malabrigo Finito is one of those incredible yarns that's hard to forget. It's like cashmere, but without the price tag--a 200 yd skein of fingering weight comes in at $16.95. Another thing to love? It's incredibly rare. So rare, in fact, that it only comes to the U.S. from Uruguay once a year--and once it's gone, it's gone. (Malabrigo introduced this yarn to the market in 18 colors about two months ago and they've already totally sold out of six colors!) We feel incredibly lucky to have 10 colors in stock and plan to keep them as long as we can. But don't wait too long! It may not last!

Pattern suggestions? I'm currently knitting a pair of Purple Muscari fingerless mitts with one skein in Chispas but The Delft Fingerless Mitts would be a great holiday gift for your very feminine sister-in-law. With two skeins, you could make a lovely Ishbel or Karen shawl.

Scalene Shawl

Saturdays,

June 30th & July 7th

2-4 p.m.

Scalene is an asymmetrically shaped, triangular scarf that features both horizontal

and vertical keyholes for several styles of wear. This gender neutral design looks great on women and men of any age. The knitting is simple enough for an adventurous beginner, but interesting enough for knitters at any skill level.

Mastering Gauge
Saturday, June 23rd
1-3 pm

Somewhere, sometime in the land of knitting, gauge was given a bad name. Mastering gauge--or at the very least, understanding how to achieve it--is the tool that will take you from a shy, novice knitter to a well-equipped one. Gauge puts your mind at ease. Once you have done your background work, you can be assured a knitted piece will fit.

One 1-hour session. Materials included.
