Wool & Honey
New Year: New Classes
(and The 12 Knits Gift Certificate Winners!)
Happy New Year, friends!

A new year, a fresh start--can you believe it's 2012 already?  This time of year is always inspiring for me.  I have big plans, both personally (a garden! from seed!) and professionally (well, that's a bit of a secret!)--and am looking forward to learning, growing and trying out some new changes.  With classes, more trunk shows (read more below!), new yarn vendors and an ever-growing list of exciting new designers at Wool & Honey, it looks like 2012 will be the year to beat.

And how about you?  What are your goals for the New Year?  Interested in learning how to steek a sweater?  Want to keep your toes toasty with your first pair of socks?  Maybe you're picking up knitting needles for the very first time--and your coworkers are, too.  We hope you'll find something here you like.  We'll be ramping up our class schedule this winter much more than in years past--look for emails from us every two weeks for a revised schedule.
Grab a cup of tea and settle in--winter's the perfect time to cozy up with a lap full of yarn!

Briar Rose Fibers

Grocer's Daughter Chocolates

Friday, February 10th: 6-9 pm
Saturday, February 11th: 10 am to 3 pm

Yarn and chocolate....what could be better?  Join us for a weekend of fun with some exquisite treats from two of our favorite Michigan artisans.  On Friday evening, we'll be open until 9 pm with both Briar Rose Fibers and Grocer's Daughter Chocolate.  At 7 pm, Mimi will be giving an informal talk on artisan chocolates, complete with a few samples!  Both Briar Rose and Grocer's Daughter wares will be available for sale all weekend--don't miss out on this perfect pairing of Michigan sweet delights!

Chris Roosien of Briar Rose Fibers has been hand painting yarns and fibers since 2004.  Merino wool, silk, Tencel and several wool blends are just a few of Briar Rose's signature fibers dyed in a breathtaking, saturated hues.  She travels the country attending fiber festivals, trade shows and open houses year-round--we're so lucky to be welcoming her here!

Grocer's Daughter Chocolate was also started in 2004 and is owned and operated by Mimi Wheeler.  She uses fruits, edible flowers and herbs from her summer garden and from the soils and the natural beauty of northern Michigan--just a few miles away, perched atop a dune in the quaint village of Empire.

Open Knitting:
Saturday Stitch
Every Saturday morning from 9 to 11 a.m.

We know for most people, leaving the house in the dark and cold on a weeknight for open knitting doesn't sound like much fun.  The roads can be iffy, too--all the way through April.  So join us as we begin our second year (!) of Saturday Stitch.   Saturday mornings from 9-11 a.m. We'll have coffee and tea on to coax you out of bed and we might just have sweet treats, too.  (Okay, we're sure of it--there will be treats!)

Open Knitting, or as we call it "Saturday Stitch", might just be the thing to jump start your knitting this winter.  There's no agenda here, other than for a group of knitters, crocheters and spinners to get to know each other while enjoying their favorite type of craft.

There are a few ground rules, though, that we'd like to make sure you're abreast of as we start a new year.

-Open Knitting is not a club.  This isn't a members-only kind of gathering: ANYONE and EVERYONE is welcome.  (And yes, that includes kids!)  We do our best to make everyone feel welcome, whether you're a beginning knitter or you've got 48 years of stitching under your belt.

-Open Knitting is not a class.  Sure, there are lots of people here to share advice and offer help when you're in a bind, but please be mindful of those who come to enjoy themselves.  If you need help with an extra sticky project, we'll be happy to schedule a private lesson for one-on-one intensive instruction.

-Open Knitting--whether it's a late night mid-week or an early Saturday morning--is made possible by customers like you.  While there is no charge for Saturday Stitch (yup, it's FREE!), please keep in mind that a yarn shop is a business--thank you for supporting your Local Yarn Shop.

Finishing Techniques
finishing techniques

One of the most important aspects of knitting isn't the actual knitting--it's the sewing, seaming & wrestling that some cleverly call "finishing".  Knowing how to match up the proper techniques insures overall knitting success.  This session will put you at ease, leaving you to create pieces you're proud to call hand-knit.  We hold this class at least once a month, year-round;  these techniques are essential for knitting success!
