The 12 Knits of Christmas 2009:
Week One
Greetings!

So.  Here we are.  12 weeks from today is Christmas Eve.  Are you ready?  No?  Well, good--that's what the 12 Knits of Christmas is all about!  Every Thursday afternoon, you'll receive a FREE pattern--either an Inish Knits original creation or from another clever online crafter--that we've deemed "do-able" within the course of a week.  These patterns are super simple, and there's a reason.  You've got kids.  Sports.  Dogs.  You're working 40-plus hours a week.  We want you to feel like you can actually get something done during these crazy weeks leading up to the holidays.  (Sorry--there's nothing we can do about the 17 dozen lebkuchen you've got on the list!)

And that's not all.  The yarn that's featured in each week's project is available at 20% OFF for the entire week*, so the projects are as easy on your wallet as they are on your brain.  With 12 full weeks ahead of us, if you try your best to keep up, you'll have a nice collection of gifts come December 25th.

 Big City, Small Town:
A Simple Hat Pattern

This slouchy little hat is the kind of knit that looks good on everyone-a little loose, a little tweedy, a little color--in short, a great holiday gift.

Whether you're trying to block out the chill, cover up a bad hair day or keep up with this season's stylish berets, this knit's for you!  (I've got another on the needles right now--even in downtown Cedar, I can pull off this "big city" look!)

Yarn: Noro Silk Garden Sock-one skein.

Gauge: 6 sts/inch on US 3 needle (or size needed to obtain gauge).  24" circular and double-pointed needles.

Pattern

With circular needles, cast on 100 sts.  Join to begin knitting in the round, being careful not to twist sts.  Work in st st (knitting every row), until piece measures 1 " from cast on edge.

Next row (increase row): *K2, m1; repeat from * across row.  (150 sts)

Continue to work in st st (knitting every row) on these 150 sts until hat measures 5" from cast on edge.  (Note: if you'd like the hat to be more slouchy than the sample, add an extra inch or two of stockinette here.  You'll have plenty of yarn, if you so desire.)

Begin decreasing as follows:
(switch to double pointed needles when you have too few stitches to stretch around the circular needle)

Row 1: *K13, K2tog, K13, ssk; repeat from * across row.

Row 2 and all even numbered rows: Knit all sts.

Row 3: *K12, K2tog, K12, ssk; repeat from * across row.

Row 5: *K11, K2tog, K11, ssk; repeat from * across row.

Row 7: *K10, K2tog, K10, ssk; repeat from * across row.

Row 9: *K9, K2tog, K9, ssk; repeat from * across row.

Row 11: *K8, K2tog, K8, ssk; repeat from * across row.

Row 13: *K7, K2tog, K7, ssk; repeat from * across row.

Row 15: *K6, K2tog, K6, ssk; repeat from * across row.

Row 17: *K5, K2tog, K5, ssk; repeat from * across row.

Row 19: *K4, K2tog, K4, ssk; repeat from * across row.

Row 21: *K3, K2tog, K3, ssk; repeat from * across row.

Row 23: *K2, K2tog, K3, ssk; repeat from *across row.

Row 25: *K1, K2tog, K1, ssk; repeat from * across row.

Row 27: *K2tog, ssk; repeat from * across row.

Cut yarn and pull through remaining sts on needle.  Weave in ends and lightly block.  Enjoy!

*Just like all Inish Knits patterns, please feel free to pass this pattern along to as many friends as you'd like.  Knit one for each of your 15 grandchildren.  Please remember, though, that this pattern belongs to the shop and is protected by copyright--it is not to be knit for profit.  But you knew that, right?
Look for a "regular" October newsletter at the beginning of the week, which will include more of what's happening at Inish Knits throughout the fall.  It's knitting season--and I couldn't be happier!

Best,

Melissa
