All Local, All The Time:
Summer in Northern Michigan

August 2009
Summertime is our crowning glory here in Leelanau--this is the time to be living the Good Life!  It's time for apricots, braving a dip in the Big Lake, meteor showers and the Northwest Michigan Fair.  Since there's no possible way to squeeze it all in, we thought we'd share just a few of the goings-on around this busy, busy place!

Taste the Sweet Life!
Curt's Corn
and
Cedar Sol Farm Strawberries

Handspun Yarn
While Inish Knits keeps me plenty busy, farming is a big part of life at home for my husband Curt.  He is intricately involved in his parents' dairy operation, he raises several pigs throughout the year and this summer, he planted five acres of sweet corn.  We couldn't possibly eat it all, so we're bringing our sweet corn to you with a farm stand on the shop's front step!  Curt planted six different yellow-and-white varieties that will ripen at varying times throughout the season.  This week's variety?  Bon Appetit--perfect for that weekend BBQ!
We'll also be selling hydroponic strawberries throughout the months of August and September.  These picture-perfect berries are grown by our friends Mike and Nikki McHugh at Cedar Sol Hydro Farm, right here in Cedar.

The stand will be open during regular shop hours:
Monday-Saturday: 11-6 p.m.
(open until 8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays & Wednesdays)
Sunday: 1-4

Local Artisan Spotlight:
Elizabeth Neddo, Vibrant Fibers

Liz's Yarn & Fiber
Pokeberries, mulberries, spinach, goldenrod, merlot....What do any of these things have to do with knitting?

If you're Elizabeth Neddo, everything.  Constantly on the lookout for rich pigments found in nature, Elizabeth uses a science background--and a love for the fiber arts--to create natural dyes for yarn and spinning fiber with plants, berries and other foodstuffs grown right here in Leelanau County.  The yarn (Merino wool in both worsted and bulky weights) is organically grown and spun in the United States.

These gentle hues are truly striking--and truly original.  Elizabeth is preparing for several upcoming fiber festivals this fall, including the Northern Michigan Lamb & Wool Fest (September 25-27) and the Leland Fiber Festival (October 9-10).  Vibrant Fibers is exclusively sold at Inish Knits --and will soon be available through Elizabeth's Etsy shop.

p.s.  There's another reason I love this beautiful wool so much--Elizabeth is my sister!
Whew.  And if that's not enough, this weekend is the annual Michigan Fiber Fest.  I'll be heading down tomorrow morning to get my wool fix--check out my blog, The Land of Wool and Honey, over the next few days to see what kind of trouble I get myself into this year.

Happy knitting!
