   Early July 2009
Greetings, knitters!

Happy July!  Happy birthday, America!  Happy, happy!  July is the most delicious time of year for us Michiganders--the month we've been waiting for since November.  The boating!  The cherries!  The summer concerts!  That shining, glowing, Vitamin D-infusing orb in the sky!  Yay for summer--and let the Wild Rumpus start!

We've got some exciting upcoming classes--our first-ever Sleeping Bear Fiber Arts Camp for Kids and Uniquely You: Knitting To Fit Your Body, a class designed to get you the results you want from your sweater knitting.  They're coming right up (sorry about the last-minute notice!), but we figured that summertime in Northern Michigan is all about spontaneity.  (Who plans ahead during these lazy, hazy summer days?!?)  Both the Sleeping Bear Fiber Arts Camp and Uniquely You would be a great way to learn a little more about the fiber world--and either would be a great way to entertain your summer guests!

Uniquely You:
Knitting to Fit Your Body
Saturday, July 11th,

We're really happy to announce a class we've been planning for a long time--a class devoted entirely to fit.  One of the biggest complaints customers have is that after they've doled out a decent amount of cash and an even greater amount of time, they're disappointed to find that the garment they've been working on for the past six months doesn't fit.  Too big, too small, the armholes are too tight...whatever the concern, it usually leaves a bad taste in a knitter's mouth, sometimes even discouraging them from knitting at all.  Which makes everyone sad--knitting doesn't have to end up that way!

One of the biggest joys of being a knitter is the ability to work with your hands, mind and heart in an effort to produce a well-fitting garment you're proud to wear.  This class will teach you how to take the proper measurements, how to accentuate (or hide, if that's what you prefer!) certain parts of your body, how to read schematics, picking the proper yarn to suit the style of knitwear and much, much more.  Dana Laursen, dynamic knitter, mother of two and friend of many, is the passionate teacher for Uniquely You.  There are still a few spots left--call 231.228.2800 to reserve your space in the class.  Be passionate about investing in yourself--make your knitting work for you!

Sleeping Bear Fiber Arts Camp for Kids
Week One: July 13-17th
Week Two: July 20th-24th

We're so excited--it's Northern Michigan's first-ever fiber arts camp for kids!  Beginning Monday, July 13th, Inish Knits, along our favorite fiber neighbors Liberty Bell Quilts, will be hosting two solid weeks (Monday-Friday) of fiber love!  All kids ages 8-18 are welcome to join us, either for one drop-in session, a week or for all ten days!

The early morning session (9:00-11:00 a.m.) will be held daily at Inish Knits, and the mid-morning session (11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.) will be held at Liberty Bell Quilts.  Each session will center around a beginner-friendly small project that the students will be able to take home at the end of the day.  The cost of the session ($20/session/student) will cover instruction, all materials needed and a healthy snack for the kiddos.

Monday: Wet-Felted Soaps.  Using brightly colored fleece, water and our hands, we create a pretty (and practical!) wool felt cozy for a sweet-smelling bar of soap.  This project would make a great gift for teachers, busdrivers and grandma!
Tuesday: Knitted Dishcloth. We learn how to cast on, knit, increase and bind off.  Perfect for beginners.
Wednesday: Dye Your Own Yarn with Kool-Aid.  Students will try their hand at alchemy to create their very own fruity-scented wool.
Thursday: Learn to Spin.  Drop spindle spinning has been a part of human civilization since the beginning of time.  Come learn how to make your own yarn!
Friday: Needle Felted Holiday Ornaments.  Using a little needle and a little fluff, create a unique gift for friends and family.

Sign up info is available by calling 231.228.2800 or by emailing Melissa at inishknits@charter.net.
There are so many things going on around Northern Michigan this week that it's almost impossible to do it all.  That being said, I hope you've got a little summer knitting (socks? dishcloth? baby hat?) tucked into your bag for when you need a moment of mental clarity that only knitting can bring.  I'm spending the next few weeks knee-deep in spinning; I'm taking part in the Tour de Fleece Spin-A-Long.  Want to see how I fare?  Check out my blog, The Land of Wool and Honey, where I'll chronicle the whole debacle.

Best,
