 June 2011

Greetings!

Summer and sunshine--a chance to get outside, think big, and yes a chance to Give Big!  Please join the Seattle Foundation's challenge to make Thursday 6/23 the biggest day in King County giving history--support Reach Out and Read and generous donors will match a portion of your gift!

In such a challenging economy, it can often feel like nothing good can move forward, but that's not true.  Every day Reach Out and Read doctors put new books into the hands of smiling infants, toddlers, and preschoolers; while helping their parents understand how reading aloud and sharing books together each day can transform their child's future.

Today's newsletter helps you learn more about Reach Out and Read, while offering many opportunities for you to get involved.  Help us keep sending books home for families to enjoy this summer, as we work together to help children across Washington state be ready for success in school and life.  Learn about:

  • Give BIG! the challenge to support Reach Out and Read
  • Our recent Northeast Washington program roadtrip
  • The Wiggles upcoming Seattle shows that benefit Reach Out and Read
  • Our public library -summer reading partnership
  • The Summer of A Million books

But first please join us in congratulating our partners at the King County Library System--who were honored recently with the prestigious Library of the Year Award from Gale Publishers and "Library Journal" magazine.   Way to go!

As you head into summer, we hope you grab a book with a child, and on your own, and enjoy an escape into a world where anything is possible.

With appreciation,

The Reach Out and Read Washington State Team

Wellpinit ROR Program
Dr. Jill Sells with Margaret Koepping (Family Nurse Practitioner and Reach Out and Read medical champion) and staff at David C. Wynecoop Memorial Clinic in Wellpinit, WA

Road trip to Northeast Washington provides opportunity to visit new programs.  Thanks to our partnership with

Thrive by Five Washington's Culture of Literacy Initiative, Reach Out and Read was able to recruit and launch 13 new clinics in 2010!  This includes the very first programs in Ferry, Stevens, Pend Oreille and Lincoln Counties, through our work with the Inland Northwest Alliance for Early Learning.

Our May road trip started with Dr. Sells' in-person training for the North Basin Medical Clinic providers in Davenport, and then covered the Northeastern counties, visiting programs in Wellpinit, Inchelium, Chewelah, Usk, Deer Park, and Spokane.  Thank you to the providers and staff at the following clinics who hosted our visit and shared their Reach Out and Read programs with us:

  • North Basin Medical Clinics (Davenport, Reardan, Wilbur-Lincoln County)
  • David C. Wynecoop Memorial Clinic (Spokane Tribe IHS Service Unit, Wellpinit-Stevens County)
  • Lake Roosevelt Community Health Centers (Colville Tribe, Inchelium-Ferry County)
  • Chewelah Associated Physicians (Chewelah-Stevens County)
  • Camas Medical Clinic (Kalispel Tribe of Indians, Usk-Pend Oreille County)
  • CHAS North County Clinic (Deer Park-Spokane County)
  • CHAS Valley Clinic (Spokane Valley-Spokane County)
  • The Kids Clinic (Spokane-Spokane County)
  •  Fairchild Air Force Base (Spokane County)

Washington is a beautiful state, and it was wonderful to visit the dedicated doctors, nurse practitioners and physician's assistants who are now bringing Reach Out and Read to the families they serve.  Thank you to all our hosts, and to the providers and staff who bring the program to life each day.

THE WIGGLES SUPPORT REACH OUT AND READ AS THEY ENTERTAIN YOUNG CHILDREN ACROSS AMERICA

WigglesThe World's Premiere Children's Entertainers will Celebrate Their 20th Birthday In Seattle This Summer. The Fab Four from down under are back with this year's most anticipated family event. Please spread the word to parents and grandparents you know.

REACH OUT AND READ PUBLIC LIBRARY PARTNERSHIP

ELPLP LogoDoctor-Library pilot project teams up with summer reading in Kitsap county. Reach Out and Read is working with the Early Learning Public Library Partnership and Kitsap Regional Library to encourage families to visit the library and participate in the summer reading program.  Between now and the end of August, Reach Out and Read providers in our six programs in Kitsap County will encourage families to go the library as part of their regular Reach Out and Read visits.  Families will hear how excited libraries are to welcome them,  and receive a brochure with a coupon to claim a free book when they visit the library!  The goal of the project is to increase the number of families who visit the library this summer, and we hope this will ultimately create more lifelong library users.

Thank you to the staff and librarians at Kitsap Regional Libraries and to the Reach Out and Read programs at the Port Gamble S'Klallam Medical Clinic, Naval Hospital Bremerton and Bangor Clinics, and Peninsula Community Health Services in Bremerton, Port Orchard, and Poulsbo. Our thanks also go to the Foundation for Early Learning and the 27 library systems that are part of the Early Learning Public Library Partership for their ongoing work with us to connect Reach Out and Read and libraries, to support early literacy with children and families.  We hope this first step in an ongoing partnership between the libraries and Reach Out and Read programs in Kitsap County will help inform future partnerships across the state.

REACH OUT AND READ LAUNCHES SUMMER OF A MILLION BOOKS CAMPAIGN

summer of a million books logoSummer books instead of summer slide!  Reach Out and Read is a year-round program, giving families the tools and the guidance they need to prepare their children to succeed in school.   This week Reach Out and Read launched its second annual summer campaign to give a brand-new, age-appropriate book to one million children in need before International Literacy Day. The Summer of a Million Books campaign can help provide families with the tools and the guidance they need to prepare their children to succeed in school.  In order to accomplish that goal, Reach Out and Read's doctors and other medical providers must distribute 25,600 books every day between Monday, June 21 (First Day of Summer), and Thursday, September 8 (International Literacy Day).

You can I help! Donate a book or sponsor a child online through Reach Out and Read's Virtual Book Drive.  Your donation will directly support children in Washington state.
