The University of Hawaii's Engagement with the Study of Islam
As media and geopolitical attention remains focussed on Muslim countries, interest in the study of Islam and Muslim cultures grows. Recognizing the positive potential of this interest, the University of Hawaii (UH) system responds by offering relevant courses and with the establishment of an Islamic Studies Certificate program. Notable UHM scholars involved include Tamara Albertini (Philosophy), James D. Frankel (Religion), Ned Bertz (History), and Paul Lavy (Art History). To hear Dr. Tamara Albertini, the program director, introduce this certificate program, visit this link embedded just below.
Another significant resource with a home in Hawaii is Shangri La, a center for Islamic Arts and Cultures, administered by the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art. Listen to Dr. Albertini introduce art at Shangri La. Visit their website at www.shangrilahawaii.org. This newsletter includes notable book publications by UHM faculty, a link to UH courses descriptions, announcement of a UHM-hosted workshop "European Encounters with Islam in Asia, 1500 - 1800" and Honolulu events. We conclude here by recommending a recent article on the poetry and life circumstances of Afghan women, a poignant account of creative perseverance - and the perseverance of creativity - a decade after the fall of the Taliban and on the day of Obama's announcement from Kabul of the US withdrawal plan.
