Aloha!

Salaam ("peace") and welcome to the Muslim Societies in Asia and the Pacific (MSAP) bimonthly newsletter!

This thematic focus of this newsletter is the recent Koran burning in Afghanistan and consideration of its ramifications. We also have our regular feature of publications, upcoming events, calls for papers, information about resources, employment, scholarships, and news related to MSAP.

For more visit our recently launched website http://www.msaphawaii.org  and submit contributions or comments.
On the Koran Burning in Afghanistan and its Ramifications

When the Koran burning in Afghanistan first appeared in the news, we assumed this was yet another troubling example of failure by U.S. Military personnel to respect Afghan culture and Islam. In response, we at MSAP took this as a time to highlight the unique cultural relevance and historic place of the Koran in Islam.

As we read articles on the circumstances leading up to the desecration, and the demonstrations that left at least 47 people dead, we decided to begin with focus on reactions to the event and the potential political fallout between the U.S and Afghans, and beyond.

Access our post on the recent Koran burnings in Afghanistan here, included is a brief MSAP commentary and a series of links to recent media accounts of the event. We will continue to update information on this issue and others that inform, engage or challenge Euro-American relations with Islam across Asia and the Pacific.

++++

On a lighter note, the theme of the previous MSAP newsletter featured Islamic art collections, with particular attention to museums that have images available online. These can be found on under the culture tab on our website. MSAP indicated the text associated with many of these collections variously addressed the question of "What is Islamic art?" or, "What makes art Islamic?". Since then an article recently published in The New York Times written by Souren Melikien seriously questions the designation of "Islamic Art" itself. We find it a worthwhile read and an interesting addition to the theme of the previous newsletter.
