Islam and Volunteerism
Aloha and Salam!
Charity and service are significantly emphasized during Ramadan, and throughout the celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr. Muslims are required by the Qur'an to donate food and a percentage of their wealth to the poor, according to the principle of zakat (alms). In line with this important value in Islam, we bring you this week's issue on volunteerism. Generally, volunteerism is viewed as an effort of rendering one's time and resources to benefit others - a genuine gesture of social responsibility.
In Islam, the principle of volunteerism has a broader application than social responsibility. It is considered a spiritual obligation that represents a very important act of worship. Hence, Muslims are enjoined to voluntarily engage in initiatives that contribute to the betterment of society without expecting financial reward or anything in return - except Allah's pleasure and His approval of their generosity and acts of service.
This week's feature offers resources on Islam, volunteerism and civil society. Plus our regular announcements of educational events, calls for proposals, jobs and others opportunities.
