ALOHA!Southeast Asia Movie
This week's issue features films from several countries in Southeast Asia. We highlight movies from Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Philippine. Expression of love, religious practice, culture boundaries, and hardship of life are among daily issues that are highlighted in these movies.

We would also like to take a moment to ask for your suggestions on themes, topics, and fields of interest that we might feature in future editions of this newsletter. We urge your participation in making this a truly reader-directed information resource. All feedbacks and suggestions can be sent to us at msap@hawaii.edu.

Ayat Ayat Cinta Novel

Ayat Ayat Cinta, adapted from the best-selling novel of the same title by Habiburrahman El Shirazy, is a beautifully portrayed Islamic love story of a virtuous Muslim protagonist who overcomes all obstacles of life, while maintaining pure ideals. As the story unravels, the protagonist makes the audience face the daunting decisions he himself faces, and forces us to marvel at his undying loyalty to the true ideals of Islam as he ultimately makes the choice of a lifetime.

Deconstructing Islamization in Pakistan:
Sabiha Sumar Wages Feminist CinematicJihad through

a Documentary Lens

by

Rahat Imran

Pakistan has been a prime example of how religious fundamentalism and politicization of religion can transform a secular society into one held hostage by Islamic extremist doctrines and gender-specific laws. More recently, Pakistani independent women filmmakers have also joined the ranks of this oppositional force, thereby appropriating their right to wage a feminist jihad (struggle). In initiating an anti-fundamentalist cinema category, their cinematic contributions deserve to be recognized as part of a larger feminist agenda against gender discrimination and patriarchal domination.

Religious Identity and Mass Media: The Situation of Women in Iranian Cinema Following the Islamic Revolution

by

Mehri Bahar

Mass media has had a significant role in today's Iranian society. The presence of active artists and their features is also very important in this era. Presently, the presence of women as actresses or film producers has been a significant factor in the Iranian cinema. Throughout the pre-revolution era, cinema had treated women more like objects or commodities and because of this, they disappeared from cinema during the few years following the revolution. The role of women before the revolution was very limited and unnoticeable and they merely played the role of mother or wife. The importance of women in Iranian cinema can be traced to various cultural and social circumstances

Representations of Islam in American News and Film: Becoming the "Other"

by

Rubina Ramji

The tragic events that occurred on September 11 2001 with the attacks in New York and Washington confirmed one of America's biggest fears. Several American policymakers had already concluded that militant Islamic fundamentalists were poised to become the next most serious threat to Western interests with the disintegration of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War. Many elements of the news media and increasing number of Hollywood films represent all Muslims as Islamic fundamentalists.
