Muslim Women Leaders Muslims in Asia are recognized in Islamic history for their contemporary examples of women leading Muslim majority countries. Indonesia, the most populous Muslim-majority country, elected Megawati Sukanoputri as President from July 2001- October 2004.
Pakistan, the second most populous Muslim country, twice (non-consecutively) elected Benazir Bhutto as prime minister in 1988 and 1993. On her first term, she became one of the youngest chief executives in the world, and the first woman leader in an Islamic country.
Bangladesh, the third most populous Muslim-majority country, elected Khaleda Zia (1991) and Sheik Hasina (1996). Finally, Turkey, the fifth most populous Muslim-majority country, elected Tansu Ciller as prime minister from 1993-96. |
