Greetings!
If you follow us on Facebook or Twitter you may have seen our recent announcements about our memberships with the NDPA and DPCA which solidifies our commitment to safety by partnering us with organizations which share our goals of keeping our families safe. Drowning is the number 1 cause of accidental death among children between the ages of 1 and 4 and First Impression wants to do its part in helping to prevent those deaths by offering products you can trust and that meet code requirements for pool fences as well as being attractive additions to your property. There are several approaches you can take in protecting your own family and we have detailed those in the article below.
We were also featured on CBS 5 news in a segment on pool fence safety which is included further down in this newsletter. And finally, we have some exciting news to share with you about a new free service First Impression is offering starting this month. Read on for more information.
Sincerely, The Team from First Impression Security Doors |

Prevent Tragedy in Your Home with a 3 Layered Approach to Drowning Prevention
It's a sad fact that you can't be too careful with children around water. Drowning prevention should be a top priority if you have a pool with young children around. Not only is drowning the leading cause of accidental death among children between the ages of 1 and 5, it is the second leading cause of death for people between the ages of 5 to 44, so all drowning prevention experts recommend a multi-layered approach to help keep your loved ones safe around pools. You often hear of stories with a so-called "happy ending" where the child was resuscitated after being in the water for a few minutes, but near drownings can be tragedies too, often resulting in brain damage and a lifetime of therapies and extended parental care. The Drowning Prevention Coalition's approach involves three main strategies: Block, Watch and Learn. Block: Blocking access to the pool by unsupervised children is one of three important methods you should use to limit a child's exposure to open water. There are several different ways you can do this which are recommended by water safety experts everywhere.
Blocking access to the pool requires a physical barrier such as a fence, self closing/latching door and/or gate or a motorized pool cover. Fences should be made of non-climbable material, such as iron, heavy-duty plastic, or non-climbable mesh, with a minimum height of 54" and self-closing, self latching gate. A four-sided pool fence provides superior protection. Many of our customers are reluctant to install a pool fence due to a perception that pool fences are unattractive eyesores, but at First Impression we can design a pool fence that meets your aesthetic sensibilities while still meeting all the necessary safety requirements and your city code. Our customers are thrilled with the attractive iron artwork designs installed around their pools and have often commented that they wished they had done it sooner once they see the finished results. Protecting your family should not come at the cost of beauty.
Watch: Children should be constantly supervised around water. Most drownings and near drownings occur after the child was missing for only a few minutes and they occur suddenly, without warning or noise. Contrary to popular belief, you often won't hear a splash or a scream. Drownings are usually silent because the victim can't scream with a mouthful of water, they can't wave their hands when they are trying to breathe. So NEVER leave your child unattended, even for a few seconds, around a pool, bathtub, spa, or even a bucket of water. Even if your children know how to swim, they are still not drown proof. A child who has learned how to swim in a bathing suit faces a very different set of problems when weighed down by clothing and shoes, or if they are injured by a fall. There is NO SUBSTITUTE for supervision and eye to eye contact with your children when they are around water is a necessity. Even adults should use the buddy system and never swim or go in the spa alone either. Learn: Swimming lessons should be a priority for any child over the age of 3, but all children can benefit from lessons, whatever their age. States all over the country are adopting "Water Smart Babies" programs which help to educate families on water safety, CPR and drowning prevention. For any person who is around children, learning CPR is also a vital piece of the puzzle because keeping oxygen flowing to the brain in those initial few minutes after a water incident occurs can make all the difference. CPR should be administered by a person who has been properly trained and if nobody who has been trained is available, follow instructions given by the emergency operator when you call 911. What else can I do? There are a few other things you can do to help prevent drownings around your pool, and not become a statistic. In one county alone in Arizona, there have already been 40 water safety incidents resulting in 7 drownings deaths this year, 4 of them children. That's too many and we aren't even in pool season yet. - Do not allow children to play around in or around the pool area.
- Have life saving devices mounted near the pool.
- Keep tables, chairs, toys and other things children can use to get into the pool area away from the fence.
- Install pool alarms and door chimes as a further layer of protection but do not rely on these methods by themselves because they can and do fail.
If you find a child in any source of water... - Yell for help and pull the child out of the water.
- Call 9-1-1 or your local emergency number immediately!
- Begin CPR if you are trained.
- If you are not trained to administer CPR, follow the instructions from the 9-1-1 operator until help arrives.

See What our Customers are Saying...
"We are extremely pleased with our new front door, courtyard gate and ornamental iron railing. Your many years of experience were invaluable in helping us select the design, glass, and color that would work best for our architecture.
Everyone involved in this project exceeded our expectations: our project was completed ahead of schedule, all the installers were very courteous, the CAD drawings were right the first time, and the manager in charge of the project called to make sure everything was perfect.
Bottom Line - First Impression under promised and over delivered.
We highly recommend First Impression to anyone considering iron doors or gates. They won't be disappointed!
Best Regards,
Ron
San Tan Valley, AZ
P.S. I called 6 companies, 5 came to our house, we received 4 quotes, 3 sales people followed up, 2 submitted drawings and only 1 invited us to their showroom. It was an easy decision to select First Impression - they have the best product and are represented by professional sales people."
