National Bike Summit 12

November 29, 2011                                  2012 National Bike Summit E-news | Issue 2

Greetings!

The 2012 National Bike Summit is already setting records: 200 people have registered, which is more than double the number at the same point last year. Clearly, people understand how critical it is that every bike advocate is on Capitol Hill March 20-22, 2012 to have our voices heard and to save cycling in the Transportation Bill. What can you do in the mean time? You can tell your Twitter followers you are attending by using the hashtag #nbs12; you can share the National Bike Summit event page with your Facebook friends; and you can post and share the National Bike Summit save the date video. This is important -- every bicyclists needs to know what is happening on Capitol Hill in regards to bicycling, not just our "typical" Summit attendees. Register now to secure the early bird discount. See you at the Summit!

Best Regards,

Andy Clarke, President
League of American Bicyclists

CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS
Bike Summit 11 The League has issued a call for presentations for the 12th National Bike Summit, and the deadline is approaching -- December 31.

This year's theme is Save Cycling. Help us make the absolute most of the Summit and ensure our message is clear and focused. We invite interested parties to share their experience and expertise in the topic areas in the call for presentations announcement. Download the details to submit a presentation.

STATE CONTACTS NEEDED
Bike Summit 11 State Coordinators fill a vital role at the National Bike Summit. They help schedule meetings with their state's Senators and Representatives before the Summit, and then rally the troops from their states at the actual event. We are currently looking for willing and able volunteers from the following states:

Alaska|Arizona|Iowa|Indiana|Kansas| Kentucky|Michigan|North Dakota|New York State|Pennsylvania|Tennessee|Vermont Washington|Wyoming

If you are interested in playing an active state role at the Summit but are concerned because you've never done anything like this before, don't worry! You will have plenty of help from League staff and from our partners Advocacy Associates. We will help you draft letters for  meetings, schedule meetings, and manage your state's schedule. If you would like to experience the Summit as a State Coordinator, please email Katie Omberg.

Spread the Word!
Please help us add new voices for cycling on Capitol Hill next year. Senators Coburn and Paul aren't going away anytime soon and are going to continue their efforts to turn the heads of their colleagues against bicycling, strip all funding for bicycling infrastructure and education programs, and belittle the very idea that bicycling is a viable means of transportation. We can't let them get away with this; we can't let them turn back the clock on 20 years of hard-won progress.

You may be asking yourself, how can we get more bike advocates to the Summit and on Capitol Hill this year. The answer is simple. We all need to spread the word to get our colleagues in D.C. this March 20-22. Please visit bikeleague.org/summit_promotion to find logos, ads, banners, buttons and also our QR code. Then, post these tools on your Web sites, e-newsletters, e-mail signatures, Facebook pages and Twitter accounts. Together we can spread the word, and together, we will get more than 800 bike advocates on the Hill telling our political leaders that we bike, we vote, and bicycling must be included in the next Transportation Bill.

Visit bikeleague.org/summit_promotion to access our promotional tools.
