New Congress Proposes Rule Changes for Transportation Funding
It did not take long for the 112th Congress to stir up controversy regarding federal surface transportation funding. Last week, in their proposed House rules package to govern the 112th Congress, the incoming House Republican majority included a provision that, if adopted, may alter the way funds are appropriated for the federal surface transportation programs and could have some adverse impacts on investment in our nation's transportation infrastructure. National Bike Summit - Register Today for Discount

Bicycle Summit Round-up
There are several state bike summits already scheduled for 2011. If you live in these regions and want to make an impact on cycling, attend!
  1. Missouri's Bike/Ped Day at the Capitol 2011 will be February 1. Bicyclist and pedestrians will have the chance to speak with their legislators. Find out more.
  2. Colorado's Bicycle Summit will take place this February 7-8 in downtown Denver. Find out more and register now.
  3. South Dakota's Bicycle Summit will be held January 21-22 in Fort Pierre. Friday is a meet and greet and Saturday is packed with presentations. Find out more here.
  4. Florida Bicycle Association will be facilitating their third bike summit at the state capitol on March 24 in Tallahasse. Registration is free! Read more about the conference.
  5. Iowa Bicycle Summit is January 28-29 in Des Moines. Antonio Rosell from Twin Cities Streets for People and Andy Clarke from the League of American Bicyclists will speak at this event.
  6. Maryland's 14th Annual Bicycle Symposium in Annapolis will be February 22. Find out more.
  7. The 2011 New Jersey Bike and Walk Summit will be held on February 26 in Trenton. Register today.
  8. Oregon Active Transportation Summit will be March 29-30 in Salem. Find out more.
  9. Utah's Bike Summit will be April 28-29. There is no link yet but check for updates at utahbikes.org.
  10. The New York Regional Bicycling and Active Transportation Symposium that the Rochester Cycling Alliance is co-hosting with the Genesee Transportation Council will be April 27th. There is no link yet. Check Rochester Cycling Alliance for info.

Bicycle Friendly Business and University Deadlines

The deadline for the Spring 2011 Bicycle Friendly Business applications is quickly approaching. Submit an application for your business by Friday, January 14 to be sure it is considered for an award. Click here to learn more about the program and to access the on-line application.

Additionally, the League is accepting applications for the new Bicycle Friendly University program. The deadline for the first award cycle is January 21. Make sure your college or university makes history and is one of the first to be considered for an award. To learn more about the program, click here.

The League Board of Directors election is still open, and it is a critical responsibility for each and every League member to vote. Read more about the process and vote now.

Take the League's Annual Survey & Register to Win

There is still time to fill out the League's annual survey and register for the chance to win $130 - whether you are a member or not. The $130 cash prize will be given to one lucky survey participant...one dollar for every year since the League's founding back in 1880.

Congratulations to the League's 3,000th LCI

The League's education program has grown dramatically the past two years, as evidenced by our 3,000th League Cycling Instructor (LCI) Tom Neagli. And we were not the only ones who noticed. Neagli, pictured right in the navy shirt, was presented with the LCI certificate by Corpus Christi mayor Joe Adame this December. Congrats!

Club Leadership Webinars - Sign up Today
The League club webinar series was developed to educate club leaders and volunteers. We give you the tools for your club to succeed.

January 11: 2011 insurance package
We'll roll out the 2011 club insurance package and answer all of your questions. This session will be hosted by Marla Peters of American Specialty, our insurance broker.

February 8: Marketing
We'll discuss website, newsletter, and other outreach, with a focus on Bike Month and Bike to Work Day, in May. Panelists TBA.

Club of the Year Awards
We are now accepting nominations for our annual Club of the Year Award. For a club to be considered, e-mail your nomination to meghan@bikeleague.org by January 31, 2010. Include 1. Your name 2. The name of the club you are nominating 3. What does your club excel at? (50 words or less) 4. What has your club recently implemented that is innovative and successful? (100 words or less) 5. Why should your club be League Club of the Year? (100 words or less).

Our Board of Directors will choose a winner by mid-February. Clubs will be recognized at the National Bike Summit, in our spring Cue Sheet, and with a banner they can use on their Web sites and newsletters.
Club Newsletters of the Year
For the second year, the League is hosting a Newsletter of the Year Competition. To enter your favorite club newsletter, please send us two of the most recent issues of the newsletter by January 31, 2010. The newsletter must be a publication of a League club member organization. The League will pick a winner and two runners-up and announce the winners in the March/April issue of American Bicyclist. All three will receive a seal to put on their newsletter for the year, denoting the honor, and the winner will receive a visit from League President Andy Clarke. Good luck!
