OLD PERITHIA
Dating back to the 14th century, the historic village of Old Perithia is situated in the North East of the island, just below Mount Pantokrator and is the oldest inhabited settlement in Corfu. The village was once the capital of the Municipality of Kassopeon and was extremely wealthy - its fields stretched as far as the settlement known today as New Perithia.
There are 130 stone built houses in the village which are surrounded by eight churches.
Distinctive and picturesque, Old Perithia has been designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty and is a protected heritage site.
Old Perithia is typical of the several almost deserted villages which are a feature of the Pantokrator mountain range. It was established during Byzantine times when pirate raids forced people to leave the coastal plains and hide themselves in more inaccessible regions which were also where they were able to grow crops and keep livestock.
Its location is perfect - a mountain ridge made it invisible to the pirates; however, it is accessible from the coast via a series of connecting valleys. Driven into the mountains to protect themselves from the pirates, the then inhabitants were almost sufficient but made the occasional journey to other local villages lower down the mountain on foot or by donkey.
Today there are only 2 permanent residents and 4 tavernas, open during the summer and weekends during the winter. It's an hour's drive from Corfu town and about 20 minutes from Kassiopi, Agios Stephanos or Acharavi - so if this is not a place you've visited as yet, it's well worth the effort.
A book entitled 'Old Perithia' with detailed information, map and walking guide is available at all good book stores in Corfu Town and on the NE Coast.
