Winter on Corfu - why not make a visit out of season?
For six or seven months of the year, Corfu's main resorts are busy and full of tourists. But there is a different Corfu to see in the winter as the typical holiday resort will become very quiet. But of course, life does not stop for the locals when the last plane has departed at the end of October, and in CorfuTown and many of the villages, it's life as usual. Greek life that is - and the hospitality and friendliness of the local people remain the same throughout the year. The fact that there may not be a direct flight during the winter is no longer a major issue - especially from the UK. There are daily flights from the UK to Athens with a host of airlines - Easy jet, Olympic Airways, Aegean Air and BA and then there are several daily domestic flights from Athens to Corfu. For the more adventurous, there is also the option of driving to Corfu from Athens as ferries run from Igoumenitsa to Corfu every few hours. So while some years ago one may not have even considered Corfu as a winter destination, today it is just as accessible as in the summer. So what is there to do? Well much the same as in the summer really, apart from sunbathing and swimming in the sea (although you will see some dedicated winter swimmers). There are some great walks found all over the island and walking is something that many always mean to do in the summer but found it just that bit too hot! Why not explore the mountain villages, sit in a local café and watch life go by drinking a coffee? (Local homemade wine or ouzo will also be on the menu too)
For the golfers among you, the 18 hole golf course is open all year round. Corfu town, which is bustling in the summer, is also a hive of activity in the winter too. Apart from more 'tourist' shops in the old Jewish quarter which are closed the rest of the town is open and bustling. There is no denying that the weather is changeable and unpredictable during the winter, but with temperatures on average 15 ˚C in November, with January / February (generally the coldest months) being around 10 ˚C - it is certainly warmer here in the winter than in most other European countries. All in all, Corfu offers a great deal to anyone in the winter.

October 28 - 'OHI DAY'
If you happen to be on Corfu on Wednesday 28th October, don't miss the chance to see the parade in Corfu town to commemorate the day when Greece entered the Second World War and also the day when the Prime Minister (General Ioannis Metaxas) gave the strong reply of 'OXI" (NO!) to Mussolini's request to allow Italian troops into Greece. Tanks, military personnel, armored vehicles and students can be seen in Corfu, with a parade around the main square (upper esplanade).
