Corfu During WWII
During the second world war, The Corfiots bravely fought
against the Italians in order to stop them occupying their island. They took part
in operation Latzides, which was made up of mainly Corfiot soldiers, this ended unsuccessful, and Greece
finally surrendered and the island
of Corfu became under
Italian control and occupation.
On the first Sunday of
November 1941, High School students from all over Corfu took
part in protests against the occupying Italian army, this was one of the
first acts of "resistance" in occupied Greece and consequently a number of
Corfiots escaped.
The German
occupation and the Holocaust
Upon the fall of Italian
fascism in 1943, the Nazis moved to take control of the island. On 14 September
1943, Corfu was bombarded by the Luftwaffe and these bombing raids destroyed many parts of Corfu Town
including its market place and Hotel Bella Venezia. The worst architectural
losses of Hitler's Luftwaffe bombings were the splendid
buildings of the Ionian Acadamy and the Municipal Theatre (see
November 2008 CPA newsletter) which was later replaced by a nondescript, modern
box-style building. There have been discussions and plans at local-governmental
level, on and off, about demolishing this modern building and replacing it with
a replica of the old theatre; in contrast, the Ionian Academy has been rebuilt
to its former glory by the Ionian University.
The Italians capitulated,
and the island came under German occupation. Corfu's
mayor at the time, Kollas, was a known collaborator and various laws were
passed by the Nazis prejudiced against the Jewish. In early June 1944, while the Allies bombed
Corfu as a diversion from the Normandy Landings the Gestapo rounded up the Jews of the city, temporarily incarcerated them at
the old fort, and on 10 June sent them to Auschwitz, where very few survived. Approximately two hundred out of a total
population of 1,900 managed to escape by finding refuge with some of the
locals.
Corfu was finally liberated by
British troops, specifically the 40th Royal Marine Commando, which landed in Corfu on 14 October 1944.
Did you know?
During the occupation of Greece in the Second World War, a
concentration camp for prisoners of the Greek National Resistance Movement was
established on the islet of Lazaretto (a small islet opposite Alikes, north of Corfu town). More than 100 resistance heroes are
estimated to have been executed on Lazaretto. The church of Agios Dimitrios,
some small towers, a few cisterns, the old cemetery and a wall against which
prisoners were shot still survive there.
And.....
The book "Aircraft Down" by
Philip D Caine includes an account of an American B-17 War Plane Bomber
with a 10 men crew on board crash landing in the area of Lefkimmi, south of Corfu. Local
Lefkimmi patriots courageously rescued them, hid them and safely led them into
the hands of the allies.
