CHRISTMAS IN GREECE / CORFU |
The old town of Corfu with its small-narrow roads and old buildings transfers visitors back to the beginning of the 20th century. This 'romantic' scene brings about nostalgia when Christmas lights and decorations are seen hanging from the trees or above the streets. Lights on the trees, create the feeling of stars above, and together with the old Venetian buildings, the sight is amazing.
The traditional Greek Christmas decoration used to be a small wooden fishing boat with lights on it. The 'Christmas tree' is a Western influence. Through the years it has become more established and in the last decade or so, Corfiots have been very keen on decorating both the inside and the outside of their houses.
For the Corfiots, Christmas actually starts on the 12th of December with the celebration of the name day of St. Spyridon, the patron Saint of the island. On that day all the decorations in Corfu town are lit and a traditional sweet called 'loukoumades' (a dough based fried sweet served with honey-syrup and cinnamon), is offered on the streets before people go to the church. Many people stay up all night in the church praying and singing. Corfu is also very well known for its brass bands. There are four based in the town and during the Christmas period and on St. Spyridon day, they give concerts.
The tradition of exchanging gifts is on the night of 31st of December (St. Vassilios day). St. Vassilios is Santa Claus who brings the gifts.
Another tradition is carol singing. Carol singers visit shops, offices and homes and are often accompanied by friends playing musical instruments. Children especially enjoy this part of Christmas, singing, playing triangles and receiving either sweets or money as their reward! In the Greek Orthodox tradition, carols are sung on Christmas Eve (Dec. 24), New Year's Eve (Dec. 31), Epiphany day Eve (Jan. 5). The lyrics sung on those days are different for each day.
