Report: 75% of Canadians feel more relaxed about spending in the summer

Splurging on shopping, dining on restaurant patios and taking weekends away, three-quarters of Canadians admit they are more relaxed with their spending and saving habits during the summer months.

According to the survey, the majority of Canadians have let their budgeting (38%), saving (37%) and bill payments (50%) slip by the wayside as they enjoy the warm weather this year.

"Summer is a great time to relax and have fun with friends, but it doesn't mean you should take a vacation from your financial responsibilities," says Raymond Chun, Senior Vice President, TD Canada Trust. "If you take a little time to plan ahead and tweak your budget in preparation for your summer spending, you can make the most of the warmer weather without compromising your savings plan."

Canadians attribute the lure of the summer sun, patios and travel opportunities as the cause of their lax attitudes towards their personal finances. Two-thirds say the weather makes them feel happier and more willing to spend money (66%) or that there are so many activities to enjoy in the summer they figure they'll make up the money in the colder months (64%). Six-in-ten attribute their splurges to eating and drinking out more with friends (61%) or taking more vacations (60%).

Quality Assurance

As our past students of KGIC know, providing quality services is a point we take pride in.

Recently our ESL campuses in British Columbia are honoured to be recognized by British Columbia Education Quality Assurance (EQA). In the past this status was reserved only for public institutions.

We are happy to have the EQA seal as a private ESL institution in British Columbia recognizing the quality programs we've always been happy to offer at all our KGIC campuses.

In this addition of KGIC eNews we catch up on what ALL of our KGIC campuses did over the summer. Our students were faced with a heavy work load but we still found time to have a lot of fun and make memories and friendships that will last a lifetime! . We also love to show off the great beauty found in Canada from coast to coast.

Summer in Halifax

Canoes & Climbing

Summer 2011 was a wonderful and exciting season as our campus was full of diversity and activities were plentiful. However the weather was below the seasonal norm for Halifax.

Canoeing in Halifax Harbour
Canoeing in Halifax

This cooler weather didn't stop KGIC students from enjoying an afternoon of canoeing on the Northwest Arm of the Halifax Harbour. We were all given instructions on canoeing, vocabulary and equipment. Soon students were jumping into canoes and skimming across the harbour. Luckily, no one fell into the water!

We also visited DalPlex, a recreation centre on the Dalhousie University Campus, where there is an indoor rock climbing wall. Students learned how to wear the harness and support each other with the rope lines. Soon enough we were scaling the walls like Spiderman.

Rock Climbing In Halifax
Climbing at Dalhousie University
Some felt confident enough with their climbing techniques to climb without ropes, while others alternated climbing with ropes and supporting their friends.

One of our most popular activities, for players and spectators alike, was the 5 on 5 Football Tournament. We had 6 teams battling it out for the title of KGIC Halifax 5 on 5 Football Champions! Congratulations to Team BAGBAG!

Summer in Vancouver
Sun, Snow, Surf & Soccer

Vancouver is beautiful in the summer and KGIC Vancouver students took advantage of the local attractions and festivals. Snow on Grouse MountainWe attended Vancouver's 125th birthday party in Stanley Park, visited the Aquarium, hiked to the top Grouse Mountain, where we played in snow and saw some black bears!

We were everywhere. We went to the Richmond night market, biked around the Seawall, Kayaked at Deer Lake Park, in Burnaby. We explored the Vancouver Art Gallery, English Bay, Kitsilano beach and the waterfalls and suspension bridge at Lynn canyon.

Students and staff also enjoyed Vancouver's annual "Celebration of lights" Fireworks displays. This musical fireworks competition takes place in English Bay and the fireworks are beautifully reflected off the water. This year China, Spain and Canada competed allowing us to watch 3 amazing shows over the course of 10 days.

KGIC Vancouver also held a Student Appreciation Sports day & BBQ. We had over 450 students meet at Trout Lake Park to compete with their Communications class teams in fun outdoor games like limbo and a hockey shoot out. Teachers grilled up hot dogs and veggie burgers for all. It was a beautiful and memorable day for all.

KGIC Soccer TeamWe also have a KGIC Soccer team that has been playing, every Thursday, in a league against other local ESL collages. KGIC has made it to the finals and our large cheering section will no doubt double for the last games.

We also hosted the KGIC Soccer Tournament Soccer Tournament 2011 Group Pic

which brought out the Robson, KGIBC-CTC, Surrey and Victoria campuses, as well a staff team to Andy Livingston Soccer Park for a full day of competition. It was almost 30 degrees in the sun as we battled it out to see who would win the big trophy and prizes. Our Robson1 team took top spot and the staff that played couldn't walk properly for days.

Summer in Toronto

 Festivals, Food & Baseball

Summer is the season when Toronto really comes alive with festivals and events. Students have enjoyed a number of walking tours, exploring the University of Toronto and Kensington Market and live Jazz performances at Toronto's most famous music spot, "The Rex".

The summer would not have been complete without a visit to the CN Tower, CN Towerwhich is no longer the world's highest tower but it is still impressive. Over 100 of us made the trip up to the highest point in Toronto, with some claiming to be able to see Niagara Falls!

Students also had the opportunity to experienced foods from around the world. We ate at a 'Turkish Pizza' specialty restaurant, experienced the wonders of haggis and deep-fried Mars bars, at Toronto's only Scottish pub and restaurant, and had a wonderful buffet lunch at one of Toronto's best Indian restaurants. We also tried a delicious traditional Canadian treat, poutine! Students raved that it was the most delicious, but probably least healthy dinner they have ever had!

July also saw the visit of Japan's most famous Blue Jay's Baseball Gamebaseball player, Ichiro Suzuki, and over 50 students attended the game at The Rogers Center to cheer him on. The Blue Jays won the game, thanks to the great José Bautista. It was a great game!

Fall is soon approaching and we are excited to see which celebrities from Hollywood will visit Toronto for the 'Toronto International Film Festival'.

Summer at KGIBC - CTC
Treats, Teachers and Science

Another busy summer at the campuses of KGIBC-CTC is almost at an end. As we heaped on the usual heavy workload of lesson plans, business proposals and translation tasks we also wanted to show our students our appreciation for their hard work.Tim Hortons Coffee

On July 22nd we greeted students with a true Canadian Tim Horton's breakfast of coffee and muffins. After lunch the instructors scooped out a delicious summer treat - ice cream sundaes with all the fixings.

Our TESOL for Middle School students hosted an excellent science fair with attendees from various programs and various campuses. There were a lot of neat things to learn about; from optical illusions to vibration and sounds.

We also had 40 instructors from the "Jeollanamdo Educational Training Institute" attended a seminar and workshop hosted by TESOL instructors Dena VanDalfsen and Pete Hall. These Korean visitors learned about the 'TESOL for Children' and 'TESOL for Middle School' programs offered at KGIBC-CTC as well as some practical teaching tips for English lessons. August has also included the launch of our new online test for Special

Programs.

KGIBC-CTC would also like to announce the return of Christina Cho as the Korean Interpreting and Translation Coordinator and Pandora Siganakis as our TESOL Coordinator. We are happy to have these talented instructors back.

Summer In Victoria
Fun, Food & Football

The sun continues to shine in British Columbia's beautiful capital city and KGIC Victoria has had a summer full of great adventures for our students.

Beacon Hill ParkIn addition to awesome activities like whale watching, kayaking, hiking, afternoon tea, golf, and beach volleyball, we also held a Student Appreciation Day BBQ in famous Beacon Hill Park.

Students and teachers walked to the beautiful park together, where staff members were busy preparing a Canadian-style BBQ lunch for everyone. After lunch came the main event: a Student vs. Teacher soccer game!

KGIC Victoria's student team faced off againstKGIC Friends on the Field their teachers and staff in a very good match. Although the teachers put up a good fight, the students came out victorious. Students and staff not playing in the game enjoyed watching from the sidelines, cheering and eating strawberries and other yummy snacks.
