Happy Birthday KGIC

Happy 15th Anniversary!

Tae Yeong Kim

It's been quite long time since KGIC was first founded.

The reason why this school has been running successfully for 15 years is not only the good quality of English education but also all the teachers' passion and effort on teaching English.

KGIC is one of the biggest language schools in Canada and there are many people from all around world.

So, I've met a lot of classmates from different countries and made friends with them in KGIC. Also, I've experienced various cultures that I had never experienced back in my country.

I hope KGIC will continue to develop in the future so that more and more students can enjoy learning English in the beautiful country, Canada.

May 2011: 15- year celebration KGIC!

Greetings!

On May 28th, KGIC will celebrate it's 15th year anniversary. From our humble beginnings in 1996 with our first school of seven classes in Surrey BC to present day with seven locations in five cities across Canada, KGIC's growth has been a tremendous success.

It is our students and their success that have allowed us to succeed, hence our motto, "Your success is our success." Our students have given us amazing feedback on their educational needs and KGIC has made every effort to respond to the growing thirst for knowledge our students seek.

Fifteen years has not only brought an expansion of locations for KGIC, but also an expansion in programs offered, an increase in technology used in the classroom, and a continually developed curriculum.

Meeting your needs has made us a better school and KGIC a top experience for international students. May your success continue long into the future and your memories of KGIC always hold a special place in your heart and memories.

Happy B-Day KGIC

Surrey's Veteran Teacher
Michael Moorhouse

Michael Moorhouse     Over the last fifteen years KGIC has seen many fine teachers give their best to ensure our students have a superior learning experience while in Canada. One of these great professionals is Michael Moorhouse from Surrey. Michael is one of KGIC's longest serving teachers. He first started teaching at the Surrey campus in June of 2000. To celebrate KGIC's 15th anniversary Michael was kind enough to be interviewed.

First of all, congratulations on having the highest tenure as a teacher at KGIC!

Thank you very much. It is quite mind numbing to think about what was supposed to be a summer job has lasted this long.

What are some memorable moments you have had here?

The moments that I remember most are numerous, they mostly contain situations that have made me either smile or laugh. I guess seeing a past teacher, Chet Galpin, taped up in hockey tape at Halloween one year (he was a mummy) from head to toe and watching him peel off the tape, quite painfully, at the end of the day was one of the most memorable and incredibly hilarious events.

I very much enjoyed my long talks with Travis Gingrich while he was working at KGIC as they will be with me always.

Finally, I have to mention Angela Lanci as she is reflective of her name in being an angel to all who encounter her. Truly, she is much and dear to me and has made many moments into ones that I will forever cherish.

What are some of the biggest changes you've seen during your time at KGIC?

The growth of KGIC from its origins of the little brick building in Surrey (where I first started) to how big KGIC is today has also been dramatic to witness. Congratulations!

What were the students like back in 2000?

Well, there were no Saudi Arabian students back then and the diversity today is much greater as we presently have students at Surrey who are from Malaysia, Vietnam, Laos, and Saudi Arabia as well as all the other countries that our students represent. I view the students over the years in much the same manner as I see all else in life as one will encounter good and bad in all situations, but luckily the vast majority of the students have been quite positive throughout the years.

What has kept you here?

Without a doubt, it is the people that I have had and continue to have the pleasure to work with at Surrey. Sadly, many wonderful people have come and gone, but I remember all of those who made my days better. At present, we have a fantastic group in Surrey both in terms of our teachers (all of you!), support staff, and our still fairly new Director. As well, I have been most fortunate to have had a wealth of amazing students throughout the years who have assisted to make any negatives fade.

Bringing Business to Translation
KGIBC - CTC Introduces BIT-K

The Interpreting and Translation Program (IT-K) was launched in 2003 and since expanded into a hugely successful course with its own specialized curriculum and textbooks.  In October 2010, IT-K celebrated its 8th anniversary by welcoming the birth of its sister program, Business Interpreting and Translation Program.

BIT-K ClassroomBusiness Interpreting and Translation Program (BIT-K) is a 4-week program that ambitiously combines Business English and Interpreting & Translation skills. The program serves as an effective extension course to IT-K, but also is an ideal, independent course for anyone who is interested in learning about the fundamentals of interpreting and translation while improving their English language skills for professional purposes.

According to one of the programs graduates, Eunbee Jung, "I believe BIT-K course is really helpful for people who want to obtain knowledge about both business and translation. While I attended the course I learned a lot of useful vocabulary and expressions, so when I read the newspaper I see a lot of vocabulary I learned in class, and this pleases me. I think the curriculum is organized very well, and my favorite part was learning the job hunting topic. I am sure that it will be a great advantage when I look for a job. We had to deal with a heavy workload like presentations and homework because we had to learn a lot in one month, but it was worth the hard work."

The course explores several business topics such as Sales & Marketing, Job Hunting and Negotiating Business Deals throughout the four weeks.  The students are not only challenged to learn topic-related vocabulary and theory, but to practice interpreting for the relevant business scenarios, to translate various types of business documents, and ultimately, to complete weekly projects that bring together their business knowledge and interpreting/translation skills.

The lessons are built around the belief that language education should be practical and usable, and that the classes should be dynamic, challenging and participatory. The teachers for this program are experienced interpreters with various business and teaching backgrounds who believe that education is always a two-way street. They try to facilitate a constructive learning environment by giving their best effort to inspire their students and be inspired by them in return.

BIT-K Teacher Christine KimBIT-K teacher, Christine Kim, often finds herself impressed with the work students put into the course."Students always surprise me by coming up with ingenious business ideas, sales pitches, creative negotiation options, and just generally going the extra mile. I learn from them as much as they learn from me, and I love such a positive learning environment."
