Saudi Cultural Day in Toronto

Last month KGIC Toronto was proud to host Saudi Cultural Day. Born from one Saudi student's initiative this project was entirely student-owned. Cultural days at KGIC schools are a great and fun way for students to show of and teach a little bit about their country and culture to their fellow students.

Enjoying the hospitality of Saudi students

As the student lounge quickly filled up with KGIC/KGIBC administrative staff, students, teachers, students from outside of KGIC and even home-stay family members, it was clear that the good word of the fabulous show had spread and gained momentum. The president of the Saudi Club in Toronto and the Chair of the Noon Club in Toronto both attended and had positive feedback after the presentation. The Saudi Club President even requested that the organizing committee prepare for the Saudi Club day the following Saturday and paid a special tribute to these KGIC students.

The confidence that KGIC students have acquired through these presentations is enormous. It is a great experience to combine their English learning along with all the challenges of organizing a project and presenting to an audience. Topics covered were human rights, values, gender relations, daily life, Sharia Law, music, dance, and food. The day lasted well into the evening, but there was lot of delicious food for all.

Bursting with ideas, these students have found their voice, their creativity and are on a roll. Thank you for all have supported these students and special kudos to all those who have been a part of this exciting day.
Greetings!

Seasons Greetings! As the Christmas break approaches teachers, staff and students at KGIC and KGIBC - CTC are rushing to finish their Christmas shopping and finalize any holiday travel plans.

This past month, on December 2nd, KGIC and Sprott-Shaw hosted an Evening of Celebration for all our partners and associates. Some of our students from KGIBC - CTC were also on hand to join in the celebration. We thank everyone who attended and look forward to next year's event!

We hope that all of our alumni and current students have a fantastic holiday season.

My Experience in Halifax: Nestor LeChuga

Halifax is a small city compared with other cities in Canada, but I like that. Here I found new friends and new experiences in this beautiful province of Nova Scotia. My trip to Cape Breton for example was a beautiful experience. Cape Breton is a beautiful place to go on a weekend. It is a small island north of the province, with a beautiful view of ocean and mountains that I highly recommend.

Another place to go with all your new friends from countries such as Korea, Japan, Brazil and Saudi Arabia is Prince Edward Island, not far from Halifax and it is a great place to meet people and practice English. I really am enjoying being with so many people in the world who are all speaking the same language in this part of my life.

In KGIC, I have spent some very good months studying English.  The teachers are super cool. It is like a family within the school, and the teachers are concerned about your classes and your development adapting to Halifax. You can find good friends in school with the same interests, and the good thing is that people are from around the world.

Nestor at workIn my program ELEP in which I study and work, I am able to practice my English and work is a very nice experience because it really helps me improve my skills in English. Now I am working in Canada as a cook in a Mexican food restaurant, which is helping me to continue studying in Canada more and also to travel to other places. ELEP program here in KGIC is nice if you are taking the opportunity, you will not be sorry I assure you.

In my opinion Halifax is one of the best places to learn English because you can not find many people who speak your language because it is a small city, the people are very nice and good people in Canada. It is an unforgettable experience that I think will change your life.

Claire Weir - TESOL-C
KGIBC TORONTO

Claire Weir - TESOL-CHello Everyone! My name is Claire Weir and I am the teacher for TESOL-C (TESOL for Children) here at KGIBC - CTC in Toronto. I was raised in a town called Whitby and it was while living here that I first became interested in working with children. I was a teenager working at a summer camp and I loved planning activities and watching the children enjoy them, I also realized that I could be a good influence in someone's life.

After completing a bachelor's degree in English and primary/junior education, I spent two years in beautiful Busan, South Korea. Living abroad and teaching ESL to kindergarten and elementary aged students was one of the best experiences of my life. I gained valuable knowledge and experience in ESL teaching methodologies that I am happy to now be able to share with my KGIBC - CTC students. My experience as a public school teacher here in Ontario has been useful in teaching students about classroom management, phonics, reading skills, and child development (to name a few).

I like to think that TESOL-C is the "fun" class. Yes, it's challenging at times, but we like to mix it up and sing songs, do crafts, play games, role-play, and share ideas while we practice teaching skills. We also take some interesting trips to a local library, a zoo, and a store for teachers.

TESOL-C is a great introduction to the world of teaching children and helps prepare students for the challenges of teaching both kindergarten and elementary aged students.
