Juniors at KGIC Surrey | |
Choosing to learn English in Canada is a big decision, and for most students it probably took some time to make. Perhaps you even dreamed of studying overseas while you were in high school. At Surrey KGIC, students are getting the chance to do just that.
Junior students are teenagers either taking a break from high school in their country to learn English, or staying long-term to improve their English so they can attend high school in Canada.
In addition to learning grammar and writing essays, they need to study other subjects. "Even math and geography," says Brandon, a Surrey junior student from Korea. Preparing for Canadian high school also means learning about Canada, so the walls of the junior classrooms are adorned with maps, cultural information and holiday decorations.
So is studying at KGIC a lot different from going to high school in their country? Speaking English all the time may be the biggest challenge for students but, more than anything, remarks Kazuki, a junior student from Japan, "I miss PE - it was my favourite subject." |

The Oceanside KGIBC Resort
Are you looking for a fun, relaxing resort destination? Then the students of Hotel Management (HM) have just the place for you. The Oceanside KGIBC Resort has everything you need to truly enjoy yourself on your next vacation. Check out their amazing website by clicking on the link above and see all that they have to offer.
Sadly, the Oceanside KGIBC Resort is not a real destination, but one of the recent additions to the Hotel Management program. Hotel Management is one of the valuable courses offered at KGIBC - CTC. In addition to a certificate from KGIBC - CTC students also receive internationally recognized America Hotel and Lodging Association (AH&LA) certificates.
| | The Hotel Management class of November 2010 |
According to the HM Coordinator, Cathy Collis, the program is working to use many more technical aspects for the course like the website. Students came up with the name and slogan for the resort. They create all the content and pictures for the website. The website is constantly changing as new students come into the course. The student centred approach helps them to improve their marketing and research skills in the hotel industry.
One of the other recent changes was replacing the Leadership module with a Resort module. Students cover qualities of leadership in other parts of the course. With resorts becoming one of the bigger and ever growing tourism markets, including a section dedicated to that industry will allow students a wider study of the global resort market.
Students of Hotel Management gain from the experience of both teachers, Cathy Collis and Rita Prasad. Rita also helps those students who are doing work experience find jobs after they finish their studies. According to Rita the feedback we get from employers is outstanding. "The students are very very impressive. They often meet and sometimes exceed the host employer's expectations."
Cathy is still in touch with several alumni students from Hotel Management today, some of whom are working in some of the biggest hotel chains in the world. Cathy told us she often hears from students about how amazing their careers have become in their home countries and how they are using what they learned in class. "I love their success!" she said.

KGIC Boston Student Success Story
I-Chun (Alice) Kuo
There are some students who come into KGIC with the intention of perfecting their English skills and returning home. Alice (I-Chun) Kuo is not one of those students.
Alice has always dreamt of living in America with the intention of improving her English but delayed such a trip for six years to get job experience as a professional wedding planner. She became immersed in her job and almost gave up on her dream until one day a co-worker inspired her by taking off to L.A. to learn English.
Alice drew courage from this example and remembered once again her unfulfilled dream to come to America. After exhaustive research she chose to live in Boston because she wanted to be in a city renowned for its education and Boston offered an intellectual and cultural opportunity unlike any other. From the second she arrived at KGIC she has made it her personal mission to not only immerse herself in the language, but also the very culture of Boston by getting involved at the school and attending as many activities as possible.
Alice arrived here almost six months ago and has attended almost every activity offered at KGIC Boston whether it's kayaking the Charles, celebrating Octoberfest with Americans, or attending every Boston sport game like a true Bostonian including the Sox, Celtics, and Bruins. She has also taken an active role in getting other students out of their comfort zone in interacting with Americans and having fun outside of their studies. She persuaded students to help out for the KGIC Halloween Dance, setting up a committee of students who decorated the school and were assigned roles such as the DJ to help make the dance a complete success! It has been with her enthusiasm that so many students have felt comfortable getting involved in many KGIC Boston Campus events and experiencing all the city of Boston has to offer.
Alice will be leaving KGIC this month to spend some time in NYC before returning home to Taiwan. She hopes to use her new English skills to have better professional opportunities in her future. She hopes to be an international wedding planner with the ability to apply her talents on a global scale with her English skills and experiences in America. We here at KGIC Boston would like to wish her all the best as she continues her English studies in her profession. We are sure that her confidence and charisma will lead her to ever more great experiences in her future!
