TESOL Appreciation Fair
| |
The TESOL Practicum students put on an appreciation 'fair' during the last week (Week 4) of their practicum. The 'fair' takes place at Robson campus, over lunch, in the open common area on the third floor.

The TESOL Fair is an opportunity for our practicum students to give thanks to the staff and students at Robson for providing them with the opportunity to do their practicum at their campus. It is also a chance for them to gain experience in planning, organizing and facilitating a school-wide event, something that they will have to do at some or many points in their careers as teachers. Furthermore, the fair is another chance for the students to get out into the community and practice their English skills. The Appreciation Fair consists of, at least:
A general information booth containing information about their TESOL program.
A food and drinks booth.
A games booth.
A material design display booth.

As a whole, the practicum students have enjoyed putting on this event: Hye Jin: "Although I didn't see the purpose of it at first, after doing it I understood how helpful it was for me" Chieko: "It was a lot of fun, especially the games booth, and the Robson students really had fun - even some teachers came and enjoyed it as well" The TESOL Appreciation Fair is a new and exciting addition to the TESOL Practicum. We hope to see you out at the next fair! Pete Hall TESOL Coordinator

Greetings!
The fall may mean a slow down for many people in Canada after a busy summer. Here at KGIC and KGIBC we are as busy as always trying to make our students' experience as great as we move into the fall as it was in the summer. Networking with a Vancouver Board of Trade Member | At the end of last month KGIBC was proud to host a networking event with the Vancouver Board of Trade to help our students meet potential employers so that they can find jobs in Canada. KGIC also hosted an immigration fair to provide students with professional assistance on Visas and immigration procedures. We are very proud of the success we have been seeing amongst our alumni and current students.
We love to hear your stories and updates and would love to hear about the success you are experiencing. If you would like to contribute to your Alumni newsletter or just say "Hello" send an e-mail to the Alumni Society any time to alumni@kgic.ca. Sincerely, Your KGIC Alumni Society KGIC Education Group |

Teacher Feature: Glenn Berry, BMDP Toronto
Glenn Berry | Glenn introduced Vancouver's popular BMDP (Business Management Diploma Program) to Toronto. Before that, he taught ESL at KGIC Toronto. But he was not always a teacher. When he graduated in the 1970s, computer programmers were in higher demand than mathematics teachers. Instead of teachers' college and a career teaching in high school, Glenn worked for a number of telecommunications companies as a programmer, software designer, manager, salesman and consultant. During his career, he participated in the introduction of Unix, PCs, email, voice mail, call centres, word processing, spreadsheets, databases, cell phones, wireless data and video conferencing to businesses. Now all of this technology fits in a smart phone, but Glenn remembers when it required large air-conditioned rooms. His work took him to South America and across North America where he met many interesting people with a variety of interesting problems. His clients included some of the largest and smallest phone companies in the world. Some of his friends are "Internet Millionaires". Teaching was never far from his heart. As an ESL teacher, he quickly fell in love with teaching young adults. He is grateful that KGIC gave him the opportunity to develop into a good teacher. Then KGIBC-CTC gave him the opportunity to become a business instructor. Now he uses his own background and the experiences of his students to make the BMDP topics interesting and entertaining for the class. He also uses the Internet to bring the business world into his classroom. He strongly encourages students to explore topics of interest at TED.com. He calls it YouTube for the serious thinker. Glenn never stopped learning new skills. For many years, his emphasis was on software, rapidly changing technology and management. He has been a member of TESL Toronto and OBEA (Ontario Business Educators' Association). Next he is going back to school (at night) to earn a Certificate in Instructing Adults.

Back to School Study Tips
For students in Canada September is the back to school month. Students from elementary to University return to school and once again bury their noses in their books. With back to school being on everyone's mind this month a few study tips are in order to help all our Alumni who are also returning to school, either to a University in Canada or one in their country, a few tips to help them hit the books.
- Be Observant: Don't just focus on the material. Take a look at the world around you and try to find ways to associate what you've learned with your life and surroundings.
- Ask questions: If there is something you don't know or understand don't be afraid to ask questions. You may feel embarrassed to show you didn't catch an idea, but it'll feel even worse when you do poorly on your exams.
- Use Flashcards: Flashcards are a great study tool to help you review material. On one side of the flashcard write a question or vocabulary word you think you could be tested on and on the other side write the answer. Reviewing these cards will not only help you, but as an added bonus making the cards will also help you learn the material.
- Don't procrastinate: No matter what you think, cramming for a big test is not learning. If you are lucky you will keep the knowledge in you head long enough to pass a test, but not much longer. The sooner you review your material the better chance you have at remembering it.
- Stay healthy: Exercise regularly, eat healthy food and make sure you get enough sleep. A healthy body equals a healthy mind. You will be amazed at how much better you will be able to learn new material if your health is good. Being unhealthy is just another distraction to keep you from learning.
We hope these tips will help you excel and stay positive. Remember, any day you can learn something new is a good day!

A Short History of KGIC Halifax
KGIC Halifax students and staff | It all started in January of 2010 with a month of picking paint, choosing tiles, and setting up the campus. We opened in February with 14 fabulous students whom we will never forget. By summertime, our campus was full! We opened a temporary second location in a historic building, only a few blocks down Barrington Street. We ran our PMM (Power Speaking and Modern Media) and our TESOL courses there. In addition to our already growing student population, sixteen teenagers from Spain came to our campus in July. Their presence completely changed the relaxing atmosphere we were used to. The fun, the energy and the volume of the fourth floor doubled the moment they came off the elevator. Suddenly, the mood for the summer was established; 'Study hard. Play hard!' It has been 7 months now, but it feels like we have been here for years. We are sincerely proud of the improvements in our students' English. They try hard and honor the English Only rule, which positively makes a difference. Students are practicing English a lot off campus, too. They have impressed us with their accomplishments and adventures. They have been volunteering at local festivals, and working in restaurants and convenience stores during the busy tourist season. The summer has been absolutely beautiful here. It has been day after day of hot sun, clear skies, and warm breezes. August ended with a heat wave, followed by 'Hurricane Earl'. Despite the intimidating name, the storm mostly brought excitement, high winds, rain and a candle lit dinner for many. The fall weather is coming now, the tourist season is ending and all of the university students have poured back into our city. The streets of Halifax are alive with the excitement of first year university students starting their new lives.
Spring Snowboarding in Halifax | KGIC Halifax students enjoy the beach | We are looking forward to another fabulous season in Halifax. As the leaves begin to transform the beauty of our city, another true Canadian event, we here at KGIC Halifax will continue to take pleasure in each day, experience life together and support each other. To all Halifax KGIC alumni, thank you for coming from all of us! Wish you were here, but wherever you are, we wish you the best. KGIC Halifax Staff
