KGIC Alumnus Adelin

Hello all,

I hope you are enjoying your time and having fun this season. My name's Adelin from Paris, France.  I am a former student at KGIC [Vancouver]. I studied there in 2008. Since I left Vancouver, I usually receive the newsletter.

I am writing this e-mail for thank you a lot. I am very so happy to hear about what's going on at KGIC. My travelling in Canada was so great. The whole trip to Canada was just amazing. One of the best things about the trip to Canada was actually meeting people from around the world at KGIC.

I cannot forget my whole teachers who help to improve my skills English so quickly (writing, reading, grammar, etc...)

Best regards,

Adelin
KGIC Boston's Big Move
KGIC Boston is proud to announce our big move! On July 6th KGIC Boston moved to a more central location.  The new campus, 2 Center Plaza, Boston 02108 2nd Floor, is located in the bustling heart of downtown Boston. Across from our campus is Boston City Hall with a spacious plaza area where students and employees can relax and enjoy the day.
KGIC Boston at Center 2 Plaza
KGIC staff is eager to introduce our students to our spacious new building and to all of the excitement the city has to offer. This new larger facility will accommodate our growing student body and enable students to explore all that Boston has to offer.

The new campus is easily accessible by subway or bus and is situated near two subway stations for quick and easy transit and is a mere 5 minute walk from the "Government Center" subway station. The new location cut down travel time by an average of 20 minutes ride for the students, where all the public transportation leads to downtown Boston. A 12 minute ride can get students to Harvard Square, the heart of college life at Harvard University.

There are several fun and educational activities within walking distance or a mere subway ride away. Some of the nearby sites include the historical Quincy Market and Faneuil Hall, and many affordable restaurants, shops, musicians, and entertainers daily.

Greetings!

Canadians love their festivals.  Summers across the country are full of them.  July and August are the peak festival seasons in the country.  Alumni students who spent a summer in Canada know that Canadians love to get out and about throughout the summer.

Camping, barbeques and festivals are mainstays of a Canadian summer. The KGIC Halifax Activities Facebook Page is a great place to see what is going on there this month.  In Toronto, Summer Fest is set to begin for a fun filled weekend of diversity and multiculturalism.  People in Vancouver are ready for ten days of excitement as The Fair gets set to begin at the PNE. In Victoria nine days of great theater awaits at the Victoria Fringe Festival.

And of course our friends to the south enjoy festivals just as much as Canadians.  People in Boston will enjoy a marvelous August Moon Festival in Chinatown this month.

For all those students who spent a summer in Canada we would love to hear about your Canadian summer memories.  Visit our facebook page and post your story on our discussion board.

We love to hear your stories and updates.  If you would like to contribute to your Alumni newsletter or just say "Hello" send an e-mail to the Alumni Society any time to alumni@kgic.ca.

Sincerely,

Patricia Midori: KGIBC Student Story

KGIBC Student Patricia Midori
Patricia Midori
One of the many joys of KGIBC is meeting the diverse group of ambitious students from all around the world and learning about their dreams and aspirations.  One such student is Patricia Midori.  Patricia is from São Gotardo in the southeast of Brazil.

She came to Canada at the start of this year and studied at our Vancouver campus for three months and then transferred to KGIBC to study the Business Management Diploma Program with co-op work experience.  Patricia is just finishing up her studies at KGIBC this month and will begin her work experience in September.

Like many students, Patricia decided to come to Canada because she wanted to improve her English skills and become more comfortable and confident in the language.  She also wanted to take a business program in an international country to help her achieve her dream of one day taking over her father's agriculture business in Brazil.

Of course she could have chosen many countries and schools to help her achieve her goal, so why Canada? Why Vancouver? And why KGIBC?  According to Patricia her teacher at her private school in Brazil recommended she come to Canada to study.  One of her university friends is a KGIC Toronto alumnus and suggested she study at KGIC and recommended his agent in Brazil to help her.  The agent recommended she study in Vancouver.  So in Patricia's words she arrived at KGIBC as a result of "recommendation after recommendation after recommendation."

Patricia hopes to one day take over her father's agriculture business
Carrot Farm in Brazil
It is her hope that she can get experience in Human Resources with a Canadian company.  Since HR works with all areas of business, she believes she could learn a great deal about business and working with people from other cultures.  Her dream is to one day take her father's business which operates several farms around Brazil and expand it into exporting produce to other countries as well.

Once she has completed her co-op, Patricia plans to move back to Brazil to work and continue gaining experience.  She plans to complete an MBa in agribusiness to help her move forward in her dream.  We here at the KGIC Alumni Society would like to wish her all the best as she moves towards achieving her goal.  Patricia's hard work and determination are sure to lead her to great success!

Effective Presentation Skills
Tips for your next presentation

Good posture makes for a good presentationIn the classroom students are often called on to give presentations.  In business as well you may be called upon to give presentations for various purposes.  For our alumni students who never had a chance to take a PMM course and practice their presentation skills, here are a few tips to help you the next time you have to present either in school or work.

Practice: Rehearse your speech as much as possible.  If you can, try and simulate the environment as much as possible.

Time yourself: Chances are you will have a time limit. Time yourself and practice often to make sure you don't go too long or too short.

Visualize: Rehearse your presentation in your head.  Visualize yourself giving your presentation.  Psychologists have found that visualized rehearsal can be as effective as actually practicing in the space.

Body Language: Be aware of your posture.  Make sure you are standing up straight.  Using hand gestures can help to emphasize a point.  Just make sure that you are not fidgeting or slouching.

Eye-contact: Engage your audience through eye contact.  Avoid staring at one person or looking into the space behind your audience.  A few moments of eye contact with your audience will have them paying more attention.

Preparation: Nothing is more important than being prepared. If you are using Power Point make sure before you present that the equipment works. Practice and preparation will give you the confidence you need to wow your audience.

The Changing Student Demographics at KGIC Surrey

A diverse group of KGIC Surrey Students
KGIC Surrey Students
As many former students of KGIC may already know, the Surrey branch is somewhat unique, in the fact that it not only has classes for adult students, but also for "juniors" and "children". (Juniors are kids aged 13-18, and children are kids ages 6-12.) In the summer months at KGIC, while the adult student population increases the junior and children population simply explodes here in the Surrey branch.

To give you an idea of just how busy our school gets in July and August, the number of juniors and children in May-June of 2010 was 29, and grew to 469 in July-August. While summertime is always a time of growth for KGIC, the numbers this year are impressive even when compared to last year's numbers, when July-August numbers of juniors and children were 208.

Numbers in the adult department at the Surrey KGIC campus have also changed a bit from last year. While there has always been a heavy concentration of Korean students at KGIC, the presence of other nationalities has increased and decreased at our campus over time.

Last year at this time the adult student population was comprised of an almost equal number of Koreans, and Saudi Arabians, followed by slightly fewer numbers of Japanese, Taiwanese, and other cultures. This year there has been a slight decrease in Saudi Arabians. while the other cultures made only minimal differences in the student population at KGIC Surrey.

The presence or lack of presence of certain cultures can always be attributed to various factors, such as the difficulty of getting visas, the economy, or other issues. It is always a pleasure getting to know students and their cultures from all over the world.
