Summer Smoothie Recipe
On a hot summer day, there's nothing like a cold, refreshing drink to cool you off. Pop and beer may be the choice of many but summer is also a great time to drink what's in season - fruit!

In Canada, this includes berries of all sorts, such as raspberries, strawberries, and blackberries, and stone fruit such as peaches, nectarines and cherries.

Adding fruit to drinks is not only good for you, but lets you enjoy your favourite flavours in a different way. So break out the blender and drink to your health!

A delicious smoothie

Strawberry Banana Smoothie
To make the smoothie really cold, add ice or a frozen banana. If your blender can't crush ice (and you don't want to swallow big pieces) simply peel a banana, cut it into chunks and place in a plastic bag. Then it's ready whenever you are.
  • 1 frozen banana (or 1 cup ice)
  •  1 cup fresh strawberries
  • Enough orange juice to cover the fruit (about a cup)

Place all the ingredients in a blender and process until smooth.

For a different taste, just change the fruit to whatever is available and change the juice as well... the list of possibilities is longer than a Canadian summer!

Greetings!

The height of summer is upon us.  With long hot Canada summer days students are making the most of their time here.  Summer is one of the busiest seasons for KGIC as students from all over the world come to Canada to spend their summer learning English, taking in Canadian culture and just having fun.  Students from our Trailblazers program are enjoying camping, hiking and other outdoor activities.  Our yearly group of Spanish students is busy enjoying this great Canadian summer.  We here at the Alumni Society hope that wherever you are you are having a terrific summer as well.  Just make sure to wear plenty of sunscreen so you don't get a nasty burn!

We would love to hear your stories and updates.  If you would like to contribute to your Alumni newsletter or just say "Hello" send an e-mail to the Alumni Society any time to alumni@kgic.ca.

Sincerely,

Sarah Dawn: Dedicated to Student Excellence
Vancouver KGIC Teacher Feature
KGIC Vancouver Star Teacher Sarah Dawn
Sarah Dawn

For many of our students who study at KGIC, their time here is just one step in a long path of continuing education.  Several students attend our classes with the goal of later entering a university in Canada.  Recently one of our star teachers at the KGIC Vancouver campus has been increasing her efforts to help students along this journey toward higher learning.

Sarah Dawn joined the teaching team of KGIC Vancouver last summer and quickly became a favourite amongst her students.  Her favourite part of teaching is without a doubt the students.  She loves meeting new people and helping them.  Watching students grow and improve their English is one of the main satisfactions in her job.

Before coming to KGIC, Sarah Dawn tutored students from Saudi Arabia in academic English and spent three years at an agency for Saudi students.  This area of experience made her the perfect choice as an advisor for students.  In addition to her role as a teacher, Sarah Dawn is also the Saudi Student Academic Advisor.  Her role is to help students from Saudi Arabia gain entrance into universities across Canada, from the University of British Columbia all the way to Memorial in Newfoundland.  She often meets and counsels students on what they need to do to move forward in their education goals.

Helping students at a University workshop
University Workshop
Lately she has started running special workshops from 4:00 - 4:30 Monday to Thursday at the Vancouver campus.  These workshops are designed to give students the needed information to help them prepare for university.  According to Sarah Dawn, the most important thing is that students should study hard.  Canadian universities are great because of the welcoming atmosphere, but they can also be challenging for international students due to the emphasis on reading and writing skills.

As a final comment to all her past students Sarah Dawn had this to say, "I miss all of you! I hope you haven't forgotten all the excellent English I taught you!" We thank you Sarah Dawn for all your work and dedication in helping students achieve their education dreams.

The Mighty Schwa
A Phonetic Fixture

The SchwaWould you like to improve your pronunciation in English?  One of the most valuable tools for improving speaking and listening is the Phonetic Chart. This chart is a series of symbols that represents the sounds we make.  If you are ever unsure of how to pronounce a word check the phonetic spelling.  Knowing the sounds we make when speaking will also help you to recognize the sounds while listening.

Now that you know about the phonetic chart you might be curious about the most common vowel sound in English.  The most common sound in English is called the schwa.  This is represented on the phonetic chart as an upside down e (ә).  The schwa sounds like the "a" in about [əˈbaʊt].

The reason the schwa is such a common sound is because it is the reduced vowel sound.  In any two syllable word the unstressed vowel will often take the sound of a schwa.  Some examples of this are taken [ˈteɪkən] and pencil [ˈpɛnsəl].

The schwa is also found in function words which are unstressed in a sentence such as:  a, am, an, and, are, as, at, but, can, do, for, had, has, have, her, him, his, if, in, is, it, its, of, on, or, than, that, the, their, them, to was, will, with, you, your.

Now that you know about the schwa go out and listen for it.  You'll be surprised at how often you'll find it.  Good luck practicing your pronunciation!

Summer in Victoria

Summertime in Victoria is a unique experience KGIC students should not miss. Victoria is the capital city of British Columbia, graced with the beautiful BC legislature as well as a rich history from the days of the Great Gold Rush. But it also carries a much less known title: the Arts capital of BC.
 KGIC students jump for joy
Throughout the summer KGIC students are spoilt for choice with regular festivals and events featuring dance, music, theater and food. Centennial Square comes alive with special events and regular daytime music programming all through July and August.

Victoria's Festival of Food and Wine celebrates the passion and indulgence of Vancouver Island's food and British Columbia wine. Theatre SKAM's mobile feast of live performance returns for its second year on the Galloping Goose Trail. Audiences depart in small groups on a treasure hunt-like expedition in search of live theatre, dance, music, storytelling and opera by some of Victoria's most exciting independent performers.

Victoria Symphony Splash is an annual Victoria Symphony event that takes place on a floating stage moored in Victoria's Inner Harbour. It includes musical entertainment, food, souvenirs and the evening's highlight: a live performance by the Victoria Symphony.

The TD Gallery Paint-In is Vancouver Island's largest outdoor visual art event and it is celebrating its 23rd Anniversary. This community outreach initiative features over 100 invited professional and emerging artists from Victoria and surrounding areas. These are just a few of the exciting activities we have for KGIC students to enjoy!
