Summer Cultural Fest & Picnic:
A fun, dynamic celebration of diversity! |
August 29th in Vancouver's beautiful Stanley Park the KGIC Alumni Society is proud to host the Summer Cultural Fest & Picnic. This event has been planned and organized by the KGIC Student Alumni Committee. The SAC is a group of students from KGIC, KGIBC and CTC, who have planned and organized this event for the benefit of all KGIC students. Students from Brazil, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Turkey have met once a week to plan and organize the event.

The Summer Cultural Fest & Picnic will be a day that is truly organized by the students for the students. It will feature games and activities from all the countries involved as well as cultural displays. This is a great chance for students to share and teach other students about their country and culture. The hard work, dedication and commitment the members of the Student Alumni Committee have shown has truly been impressive. They have done everything from helping with the poster concept, deciding on the menu, choosing the activities, planning a schedule of the event and submitting a raffle prize proposal that KGIC was happy to approve. It has been a great experience to work with these students and the Summer Cultural Fest & Picnic is sure to be a success. Be sure to check our Facebook page for pictures of the day and read next month's issue of the Mosaic newsletter?

| Greetings!
We hope your summer has been great so far. With July past and August upon us the KGIC Alumni Society is proud to welcome many new students into the alumni.
We here at the Alumni Society would like to recognize our Muslim members as they begin their month of fasting for Ramadan. During this month they do not eat or drink, not even water, from sunrise to sunset. This can be especially challenging for Muslim students in Canada as they have to deal with the longer days. We wish them the best in their month of fasting.
As alwyas, students have been invloved in many fun and exciting activities this month. We'd love to hear your KGIC summer stories. E-mail the alumni society, alumni@kgic.ca, with your KGIC summer story and we may even print it here in next month's issue of the Mosaic Newsletter.
As always, we look forward to hearing from you and we hope you are having a great summer.
Sincerely,
Your KGIC Alumni Society

You Told Us and We Listened: TESOL for Children at the Canada TESOL Centre
Thank you TESOL for Children Alumni! Changes are coming to TESOL for Children and the ideas came straight from you. The course evaluations you fill out at the end of the course and the ideas and suggestions you supply are taken to heart and considered. The changes being introduced come directly from some of your suggestions.

Pre-practicum visits to observe children; a re-useable bag filled with scissors, glue, markers and construction paper to make materials; a CD to teach ESL songs and an updated, consolidated version of our course books are some fun and exciting changes to the TESOL for Children program at all campuses.
Staff are keen to usher in these changes at the end of August. The CD was developed in-house with the songs specifically chosen for young EFL/ESL learners. The CD includes both tracks with the lyrics and instrumentals without lyrics, so teachers can adapt favourite songs like "The Eensy Weensy Spider" and 'The Farmer in the Dell" to teach other topics like family and transportation. The CD is dual-purpose in that it can function simply as a sing-a-long CD or a teaching tool to use melody to introduce new topics and vocabulary.
Materials and colourful visuals are always a huge part of motivating children in the classroom, so trainees will be happy to receive their own re-useable bag filled with scissors, glue, tape, markers, crayons, construction paper and poster board. While we have always provided most of these materials for in-class use, students have had to buy their own for home use. Now we're going to save them a trip to the dollar store and provide students with everything they should need to create successful materials for teaching their own lessons.
The opportunity to view children and the developmental characteristics we talk about throughout the course help solidify the trainees understanding of differences in children's cognitive and physical development in a concrete way. Another bonus is that trainees should then be able to more easily choose which of out three practicum options best suit their future goals.
Finally our course book will be better than ever with more concrete examples, thought-provoking exercises and overall better organization.
We've done all we can to make the course as practical and useful for our trainees no matter what country they come from. Course development is a major focus at our school and we take every opportunity to improve. Professional development days are another way KGIC tries to grow. They're essential and provide opportunities for all campuses to share ideas and give input into how the course grows with the industry.

KGIC Toronto Student Focus:
Hello, my name is Jaime Gonzalez and I am from Venezuela. I would like to share my experience as a KGIC student in Toronto and how it changed my life. I came to Canada with the desire of learning English to improve my personal skills. I arrived at KGIC in November 2008 and since that date everything has gone excellent. I was welcomed by good teachers who taught me not only how to speak English, but they taught me how to live in Canada and how to interact with the Canadian Culture. I am learning a million things at school every day and I am having a good time here. I can feel how my English has improved exponentially and nowadays I am able to communicate successfully with other English speakers. For me this is a big success because I really think I used my time in a good way.
The opportunity of sharing day by day anecdotes and experiences with people from everywhere has been priceless. After having these things you can really realize how big the world is and how good it is to feel you are able to share whatever you want with people from other countries without limitations.
This is a good stage in my life and now I do not want my time in Toronto to finish. I will miss all the people I met here (teachers, students, friends, etc), but I will remember how this experience changed my life and my point of view about Canada, Toronto and people from everywhere. The conclusion of my adventure here in Canada is great and coming here was the best decision I made in my life. If you enjoy things you do, you will become successful. Thanks KGIC.
