A Personal Message
From Dr. Ara Elmajian D.D.S.

Dr. Ara ElmajianHello Friends

Although September felt more like summer this year than July, fall is certainly here.

For me autumn always feels more like the beginning of the year than does January. It's the time to start new classes, probably do a cleanse and get back to business so to speak.

At the clinic it's time to be reminded of our dental check ups and micro-ident tests. Read more below in our Dental News.

With the flu season around the corner it's also time to come in for an immune booster or a rejuvenating IV.

The latest technology at Kinetic Patterns - the EECP or the Enhanced External Counter Pulsation program is cause for much excitement amongst our practitioners and patients on the program. Although it is in the very early stages at our clinic the previous research and documentation on it is very encouraging and the reason we were anxious to have the machine onsite and to be able to offer it to our patients.

Even in these early stages we are seeing promising and profound results already.

We will keep you informed of the progress in upcoming newsletters. In the meantime if your interest has been peaked or you feel you may be a candidate for this treatment feel free to call the clinic for more information (604) 876-1150 or come in and have a look for yourself.

If you are new to our newsletter you may be interested in checking out our newsletter achive on our website

Here's to good health

Dental News

Fall is a great time to come in for a Dental Hygiene appointment and have a check up.

Many of our patients and staff have had the simple Micro-ident test to check for harmful micro-organisms in the biofilm of the mouth and the results continue to be very revealing.

We are definitely recommending anyone having a longstanding periodontal situation to have the test, as often is the case in these situations there are existing and very harmful organisms present. They should be treated to prevent further periodontal destruction and possible serious health conditions.

We are also seeing considerable correlation between positive micro-ident tests and various cardiac conditions.

There are not always obvious symptoms and indications for taking the test and therefore many patients and staff are having it done for preventive purposes.

For more information on biofilm read here.

There is also detailed information on this topic in our May 2011 and Spring 2010 newsletters.

Enhanced External Counter Pulsation (EECP)

Kinetic Patterns is pleased to announce that we have expanded our cardiovascular disease prevention and rehabilitation program to include Enhanced External Counter Pulsation Therapy .

Kinetic Patterns is among 2 facilities in Western Canada offering Enhanced External Counter Pulsation (EECP), an effective, non-invasive therapy for the treatment and prevention of heart disease. EECP works in two important ways:

  1. it increases blood flow to the heart muscle and decreases its workload. Some compare EECP therapy to passive exercise for the heart.
  2. it improves the flow of oxygen rich blood to the heart by opening, and forming new blood vessels to form a natural bypass

Candidates for this therapy include those with:

  • Congestive Heart Failure
  • Coronary Artery Disease
  • Hypertension
  • Angina
  • Peripheral Vascular Disease

We are accepting patients for treatments now. To learn more about our program contact Bonnie at 604-876-1150 or medical@kineticpatterns.ca

A Case for a Complimentary Approach in Treating Cancer
Jennie Weisenburger, ND

The term cancer usually evokes feelings of fear when heard. One of the main reasons for this fear is that the statistics report it is the second highest cause of death behind cardiovascular disease. Cancer refers to the uncontrolled growth of cells (known as tumors) that can spread throughout the body and interfere with vital bodily functions. Interestingly, half of all cancers are believed to be associated with nutritional and environmental factors.

Conventional treatment focuses on the use of chemotherapy and radiation treatments to destroy cancer cells. Unfortunately, these treatments cannot discriminate between cancerous and healthy cells so that the body's organ and immune system undergoes severe stress. As well, these treatments involve toxic chemicals and radiation, which often leads to serious side effects.

A conversation I had with an MD colleague of mine describes chemotherapy, surgery and radiation therapy as the bucket or pump used to bail out a sinking boat.  There is a time when you want to use the bucket in order to prevent the boat from getting too full of water and sinking.   If you stopped here, you would be bailing until you were too weak or tired to bail any longer, or until the hole got big enough that you could no longer keep up the pace of bailing.  This is where a more integrated approach comes in, to locate the hole in the boat and securely patch it up.  Only then, can you put the bucket down and be reassured that the boat is no longer in danger from sinking. We must be careful not to forget about the healthy cells of which far outnumber the cancer cells, and the innate wisdom of the body by only treating cancer...there are many other aspects to consider in treating the whole person.

Most of my patients are undergoing these types of treatments and so we focus our attention on using natural medicines to minimize the short and long-term side effects, maximize the effectiveness of the chemotherapy and radiation and prevent reoccurrence.  Specific herbal and homeopathic medicines are effective in decreasing the nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and hair loss associated with chemotherapy and radiation treatments.  As well, we use certain vitamins and minerals to protect the organs, such as the heart, liver and kidneys, from damage from these agents and enhance the immune system so that the health of patient remains as optimal as possible.

In addition to counteracting the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation, it is important to treat the cause of the cancer with nutrition, detoxification programs, and other natural medicines. The body's immune system has the ability to destroy cancer cells and the natural medicines are used to augment this process. Specific treatment plans are designed on an individual basis for each of my patients. This individualization allows for optimal results as each person has different requirements based on their own situation.

Natural medicine is an important necessity as part of a comprehensive approach in the prevention and treatment of cancer. It offers a safe and non-toxic approach for improving the quality of one's life. It also allows one to be proactive in optimizing their health and quality of life.

If you or someone you know could benefit from an integrated approach in cancer treatment our team is here. Contact us to book an appointment.
