A Personal Message
From Dr. Ara Elmajian D.D.S.

Dear FriendsDr. Ara Elmajian

The topic of this edition of the newsletter is "dental medicine" and how it is integral to the general philosophy of our clinic both from a dental and medical point of view. To learn more about the topic of "biocompatible dentistry" and its basic principles please read article below.

Our clinic which encompasses dental medicine as a paramount component of contemporary integrative medicine is very unique. With our team of biocompatible dentists, physicians, naturopaths and TCM practitioners we can offer our patients an individualized approach to chronic and acute conditions with a great emphasis on prevention and education.

As a dentist and a pain practitioner I know from 36 years of experience the extreme importance oral health and its effects play in a person's overall health. Oral health can have a profound influence on the regulation of the entire body. For more information on this topic please refer to the article on "Regulation and Homeostasis" on our website. Whether a person comes initially to our clinic seeking dental care or a medical condition brings them in our approach is to treat the WHOLE PERSON.

If you are new to our newsletter there is a complete archive of previous newsletters on our website containing articles on the many different modalities of dentistry and medicine our clinic offers.

On the topic of "Dental Medicine" I am very pleased to have Dr. Eva Guggenbichler joining our dental team. We have worked together before and we share the same philosophies. She is a true "biocompatible dentist" combining her understanding of treating a person as a whole with her skills in the highly technical field of dentistry.

Check out her bio on our website.

Have a great summer.

Biocompatible Dentistry

Dental Medicine, holistic dentistry, biological dentistry, biocompatible dentistry, and whole body dentistry are all similar titles describing a new approach to traditional dentistry, an approach that emphasizes that while assessing and providing necessary dental treatments a patient's general health must be taken into consideration.

Just as in integrative medicine, dentists must be aware of every element affecting a person's health and in providing dental treatment must do their best not to put additional burden on it. This method requires not only a comprehensive knowledge of biocompatible dental materials but also a willingness to see each patient as unique and provide them dental treatment that reflects that uniqueness.

Dentists possess highly specialized skills in preventing and treating oral diseases, relieving pain, restoring broken teeth, correcting malocclusion, placing prosthetics to replace missing teeth and providing many esthetic treatments that promote self confidence in patients.

The true nature of dentistry, especially with the advancements in technology and dental materials, proposes a dilemma for today's conscientious dentist.

It is their job to restore a person's missing and broken down dentition with materials that are durable, esthetic, cost efficient and not harmful to their health. Virtually all materials placed in the mouth are non-biological. The key to "biocompatible dentistry" is determining which materials individual patients are compatible with and therefore will not be harmful to their health.

There has been much evidence documented regarding dental conditions, dental treatments and dental materials having multiple adverse affects on people's health in general.

Amalgam fillings containing mercury (a neurotoxin)

Mixed metals in the mouth causing galvanism

Root canalled teeth infecting and destroying surrounding jaw bone and the infection travelling to other organs

Bacteria involved in periodontal disease producing serious health conditions such as heart disease, arthritis and autoimmune diseases in other parts of the body

Structural collapse due to missing teeth translating to musculo- skeletal problems in many other areas of the body.

As in traditional dental practices, biocompatible dental practices may also vary in the types of services they provide and/or specialize in.

Our clinic's approach to dentistry takes into consideration, minimizing the harmful effects on a person's general state of health as well as offering services to help support our dental patients during and after dental procedures.

Below is a list of basic services available to our patient's seeking biocompatible dental care:

1) Education and Prevention - oral hygiene instruction, routine cleanings and examinations and testing for harmful micro-organisms in the mouth - see Spring 2010 newsletter article on Dental Biofilm

2) Safe removal of amalgam fillings - it very important to minimize exposure to mercury vapor during the removal process - see our protocol for safe amalgam filling removal on our website.

Following amalgam removal:

Heavy Metal Testing and Chelation protocol -provided by our medical/naturopathic clinic

Detoxification and Drainage - provided by our medical/naturopathic clinic

3) Restorative Dentistry -  we strive to avoid known toxic dental materials such as mercury and a mixed metal situation in the mouth which can lead to oral galvanism - we also strongly recommend to our patients requiring restorative dentistry  "tests for biocompatibility of all dental materials"

4) Correction of malocclusion (bite problems) and addressing the TMJ (temporomandibular joint) component of head, neck and facial pain - utilizing many individualized modalities such myofascial splint therapy, myofascial trigger point injections, neural therapy and prolotherapy

5) Prosthetic dentistry to replace missing teeth and loss of vertical dimension - including implantology

6) Assessment of Root canalled teeth - we assess and treat failed root canals utilizing IONT (interosseous neural therapy), microbiological DNA tests and modern radiological methods such as cone beam x'ray

7) Dental Organ consideration - another diagnostic tool as each tooth in the mouth lies on a meridian that links it to and can affect other organs in the body -  check out the tooth meridian chart

8) Complementary healing therapies - our medical/naturopathic clinic offers many complementary services to our dental patients from healing treatments immediately following dental procedures to health consultations.  Our team of physicians, naturopaths and TCM practitioners offer a vast variety of therapies such as Chinese medicine, acupuncture, orthomolecular medicine, genetic testing, nutritional assessment, hormonal testing and women's health, pleomorphic medicine, prolotherapy and darkfield microscopy as a start. Check our website for all services offered.

Periodontal Program - UPDATE!

Congratulations to everyone who has joined our periodontal health program.  So far we have tested 158 patients and staff members! Of those tested, over 60% had harmful bacteria growing in their mouths, and started our anti-microbial protocol.  Good news for them, because reducing these harmful bacteria significantly decreases heart attacks, strokes and other inflammatory diseases, as well as prevents the immune problems found with deeper gum infections. Minimizing the harmful bacteria in the mouth is the key factor in preventing all gum disease and promoting good health in general.

Find out if you have a gum infection. Ask your dentist if you are not sure.

Signs of Gum Disease

Early stages: redness, puffiness, easy bleeding, bad breath

Later stages: receding gums, deep pockets around the teeth, and even tooth loss

Our Healthy Gums Protocol

Take our Micro-Ident test to identify any offending bacteria

Take the appropriate antibiotics if needed

Use our herbal antimicrobial rinse (see herb of the month)

Use our magic gum solution for added anti-microbial activity (see below)

 Use our perio tooth paste

Take our probiotics during and after the antibiotics

Repeat the test 8 weeks later

Consider seeing one of our naturopathic doctors to monitor your progress

Herb of the Month- Healing Herbal Mouth Rinse

Calendula 25%

Populus 25%

Echinacea 25%

Myrr  25%

Clove essential oil

This healing herbal blend is designed to fight periodontal bacteria and enhance the healing of your gums.  If you are prescribed antibiotics after you take our Micro-Ident test, we recommend using this blend for ten days to speed up the healing process.  If you are unable to take antibiotics, or choose not to, this rinse can be used for one month as an alternative, combined with the magic gum solution.

Magic Gum Solution

Get 3% hydrogen peroxide (drug store) and baking soda

Put cup baking soda in a small covered container

Wet your toothbrush with the peroxide

 Dip generously into the soda

 Brush whole mouth

One dip, once a day. Some initial irritation may occur due to the peroxide, if that is the case then just use every few days until this subsides.

Healing from Within - Psychosomatic Energetics (PSE) - Dr. Jennie Weisenburger

Psychosomatic Energetics is system of medicine that recognizes the root cause of most chronic illness lies in unresolved emotions, or conflicts which disrupt the flow of energy (an emotional block) between and within the physical, emotional, mental and soul levels.  It recognizes the multidimensional nature of illness, and aims to restore the flow of energy in order to allow for the innate healing mechanisms to be reinstated.

In many healing traditions, stagnant flow of energy or Qi (chi) is recognized as a significant contributing factor in the breakdown in metabolic and immune system functions, resulting in degenerative conditions such as cancer, autoimmune diseases, depression, anxiety, chronic infections, digestive problems, asthma, heart disease, migraines, and addiction.  PSE is based on the Eastern philosophy of chakra centres, and the associated conflicts and challenges that go along with each chakra centre.

By identifying these conflicts, we bring them more into the conscious awareness. By using the healing powers of homeopathic medicine and affirmations, these conflicts are able to melt away, restoring the energy that was tied up in the conflict and directing it back to the healing system.  While using rubimeds (emotional homeopathic remedies) you may find it helpful to journal, practice yoga or meditation, work with affirmations, counselling or other activities that facilitate the flow of energy and have regard for the mind-body-soul connection.

Getting started requires a 45 minute appointment in order to undergo testing with the REBA machine that was designed specifically for assessing the energetics of the physical, emotional, mental and causal (soul level) components.  With this device and applied kinesiology (muscle testing) we can determine which energy centre (chakra) and which emotional conflict is in need of healing at this moment.  The body generally will only show one at a time (we are not very good multitaskers when it comes to this).

Once the appropriate rubimed remedies have been identified, you will be instructed to take them over a 6 - 12 week period, the length of time required depending on the size of the conflict and how connected and open you are to healing. (These can be quantified using the REBA test device).  Follow up appointments are generally 30 minutes, unless we are doing other treatments at that time.  Each person generally has 4 - 6 conflicts to heal, but this really depends on the individual.  The process of testing and taking remedies is repeated until the testing is clear.

Rubimeds are safe to take with other medications and are suitable for children as well.  They are in an alcohol base which can be diluted in water and taken throughout the day.

CUPPING TREATMENT - Dr. Jeni Lim cupping

The practice of cupping is over 5000 years old.  Cupping is a natural treatment method in which suction cups are used as therapy. It is very beneficial for many conditions such as high blood pressure, anxiety, chronic headaches, respiratory tract problems, fibromyalgia, and muscle pain. The goal of cupping is to strengthen our natural healing powers and allow the body to resist disease naturally.

Dry Cupping Therapy:

Dry cupping causes bruises which are an irritation for the body.  This irritation activates the body's healing powers.  In addition cupping stimulates circulation by widening blood vessels.  Increased blood flow at the cupping site strengthens cell metabolism and allows for faster elimination of substances that cause pain and cramping.

Wet Cupping Therapy - cupping with bloodletting:

The term "bloodletting" may seem disturbing but it is not as scary as it sounds.     Essentially it amounts to the same amount of blood that a diabetic draws to test their blood sugars and is done with a same kind of lancet.   The regulating effect of wet cupping is caused by two factors, the loss of blood which serves as a stimulus to the bone marrow and initiates the formation of new blood cells. The withdrawal of blood changes the quality of the blood by reducing viscocity and thereby improving its property of flow.

Cupping is harmless if applied correctly and is an excellent healing method without the burden of medications or worry about any toxic side effects.  The increased local blood supply to the muscles and skin will bring nourishment and allow for toxins to be carried away via the veins.

The action on the nervous system from cupping therapy is sedating and relaxing and is an incredible addition to acupuncture treatment.
