A Personal Message From Dr. Ara Elmajian
Dear Friends Fall is upon us and after experiencing a glorious summer of fun in the sun, lazy days on hammocks and docks, and lots of outdoor activities many of us feel that September, more so than January is the beginning of a new year and the time for new projects. Taking new classes, getting back to the gym and back on track with our diets are often September resolutions. Over the past year of sending out our newsletters our focus has been on getting information out to our readers and patients. Information on our philosophies on health and the services we provide as well as covering many aspects of health we think you would be interested in has been our goal. All of our previous newsletters can be accessed on our website. www.draraelmajian.ca.
Our team of dentists, physicians, naturopaths and TCM practitioners although all possessing their own unique expertise in the fields of biological dentistry and medicine have come together with a common goal which is providing holistic, individualized care to our patients. All of our doctors' biographies and the services we provide are also outlined on our website. Although our team as a whole is equipped to address a multitude of medical and dental conditions the mainstay of our collective philosophy is prevention. In this newsletter, rather than discussing how to treat conditions we would like to talk about preventing them. Have a great autumn! Ara |
Enzymes - Dr. Ara Elmajian Nutrition is the first and most important line of defense in maintaining health and preventing disease. A diet and lifestyle that supplements rather than exhausts our enzyme supply will help to maintain good gastrointestinal health and in turn good health in general. Enzymes are complex proteins that are involved in nearly every metabolic and physiologic function in the body and are necessary for every chemical reaction that makes life possible - where there is life there are enzymes. There are more than 5000 types of enzymes creating 25,000 different functions in the human body ensuring optimal functioning of all organs, glands and tissues. Out of the 5000 enzymes produced in the body over 3000 of them are produced by our intestinal bacteria (probiotics) - our most important life partners. There are those enzymes that are produced by the body and those that must come from our food providing a favorable intestinal environment for the production of more enzymes. It is easy to see how promoting good gastrointestinal health supports our health in general. Enzymes serve as catalysts by dramatically affecting the rate of chemical reactions. Many reactions are impossible without them. Vitamins, minerals or hormones would be unable to carry out their valuable functions without enzymes. By the same token many enzymes rely on specific vitamins or minerals in order to take their action. For example, some of the B vitamins are precursors to enzymes, but cannot be produced by the body therefore must come from our diets. This is one way good nutrition aids our enzymes. Some of the major functions of enzymes are enhancing immune system health, promoting cardiovascular health, balancing hormones, supporting the central nervous system, all stages of digestion, building of new tissue, maintaining homeostasis, detoxification and reducing inflammation to name only a few. The production of a particular type of enzyme is dependent on the needs of the body at the time. For example a particular type of enzyme is required to break down alcohol in the liver. When a larger than normal amount of alcohol is consumed, the enzyme is used up, creating a shortage for other functions in the body, such as digestion. Alcohol, tobacco, certain drugs, electromagnetic waves, food additives, agricultural chemicals, environmental pollution and emotional stress are all factors that exhaust our supply of enzymes more rapidly than the body can replenish therefore tipping the scale towards disease. How can we supplement our enzyme activity?
- Consume herbal digestive bitters 5 - 10 minutes before meals. Taking bitters before meals is an age old, natural remedy to stimulate digestive enzymes.
- Chew, chew, chew your food thoroughly (30 - 40 times per mouthful until it becomes mush). Chewing stimulates digestive enzymes in our saliva, where digestion begins.
- Eat a diet rich in a variety of fresh, organic fruits and vegetables. These foods are abundant with enzymes and dietary fiber.
- Juicing and eating food raw is great as cooking can destroy enzymes.
- Eat a variety of unrefined grains. Grains provide a balance of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, dietary fiber, vitamins and minerals (important cofactors in enzyme production)
- Eat fresh, wild fish as the main source of protein, unless you are vegan
- Limit animal protein - too much animal protein is difficult to digest and may not be completely broken down and absorbed by the gastrointestinal system. It can decompose in the intestine, producing toxins that exhaust large amounts of enzymes in the intestine and liver.
- Limit dairy products - there is research indicating that milk aside from being an allergen for many people may also upset the intestinal flora by increasing the amount of bad bacteria
- Limit or eliminate alcohol, caffeine and smoking (enzyme exhausters)
- Drink plenty of pure, clean water with an abundance of minerals
- Don't go to bed on a full stomach. Eat last meal 3 - 4 hours before bed.
- As we age our stomach acid and enzyme production naturally decrease, so we are more likely to be deficient in enzymes
There are many supplemental enzymes on the market that are formulated for a variety of functions. For example there are digestive enzyme supplements that are meant to be taken with meals to aid in the digestion - absorption process and other enzymes to be taken without food to help prevent and reduce inflammation in the body. Depending on individual situations supplemental enzymes may be very beneficial. Ask our doctors to help determine whether you may benefit from enzyme supplementation. |
Naturopathic Medicine Offers Prevention tips and Relief for Viral Colds and Flu's -Dr. Jennie Weisenburger Naturopathic medicine has an extensive portfolio of treatments for colds and flu's. Herbal remedies, nutritional supplements, dietary protocols, Traditional Chinese Herbs and treatments, homeopathic remedies (in the form of supplements and I.V.'s) and hydrotherapy all stimulate our body's defense mechanisms thus reducing recovery time and providing symptomatic relief. Prevention It isn't always possible or desirable to avoid all colds and flu's. As a Naturopathic Doctor, it is concerning when a patient expresses that they haven't had a cold or flu in as long as they can remember...it makes me wonder why their immune system isn't responding to the environment. On the other hand recurrent infections are also concerning as I question what is making this person is so vulnerable. Both can be signs of immune system dysfunction. Our goal with prevention is to keep the body functioning optimally to reduce the occurrence of illness and optimize your chances of a quick and full recovery. The best preventative measures are the steps that you take each day to keep yourself healthy stressing the importance of proper diet, adequate sleep, hygiene, exercise, and an optimistic outlook on life. Don't forget the importance of regular cleansing or detoxification (see our January 2009 newsletter for more information) as part of your personal preventive program! Flu Prevention Extra's: Immune Booster A homeopathic/isopathic immune system booster or flu shot is offered in our office. It is administered via intramuscular injection and contains remedies that upregulate your white bloods cells, and strengthen the integrity of your mucosa which is where our first line of defense against infectious organisms lies. It is best to be administered before the expected cold/flu season in the fall and then again in the spring or whenever you feel your immune system is compromised. Vitamin C Daily vitamin C with bioflavonoids: again to strengthen the integrity of our mucosal membranes and vasculature, ensuring a strong barrier, and reducing the likelihood of invasion by the little bugs! Herbal Immune Tonic An herbal immune system tonic is a simple addition to your daily regimen that can help keep you healthy throughout the year. Our herbal dispensary is rich in herbs which are potent antioxidants, circulatory system tonics, immune system modulators and antimicrobials which we custom right in the office according to your needs. These immune tonics are also available in tasty vegetable glycerites so your kids will love them too! Probiotics These are the healthy bacteria that are ubiquitous in our body, lining all mucosal membranes, and covering every inch of our skin. Our natural flora are an important line of defense against illness and can be compromised by stress, medications such as antibiotics and oral contraceptives, poor diet, nutritional deficiency, food allergies, and poor digestive function. Flu treatments to try at home
If you do happen to catch a cold or flu this winter here are a couple of traditional home remedies that can assist your immune system in getting the upper hand in the matter. Home Hydrotherapy Treatments
Hydrotherapy is the use of hot and cold water to stimulate the body's immune system. White blood cells are the so called fighter cells of the blood. These cells line the blood vessels as well, and the use of hydrotherapy stimulates these cells to circulate, thus enhancing the immune system. Outlined below are a few treatments helpful for colds and flu's. If you feel something coming on it is great to start with the Warming Socks treatment...there is a good chance that you will be symptom free by the time you get up the next morning. Warming Socks
- Wet a pair of your light weight socks under a cold water tap. Wring out well. Put on both feet. They will start to warm up in a matter of seconds.
- Cover the wet socks with a pair of dry wool socks.
- Keep on all night - they will be dry in the morning.
- Repeat nightly until symptoms have subsided
Cold Compress for Sore Throats
- Wet a piece of cloth long enough to wrap around the neck. Wring out well and apply to the neck.
- Cover this with a dry towel or a piece of wool (a long wool sock can be used for this purpose)
- Keep on for 20 minutes or until the wet cloth is warmed
- Dry the skin and do not chill

Cervical Dysplasia: Prevention and Treatment with Naturopathic Medicine - Dr. Jennie Weisenburger Naturopathic Medicine has prevention and treatment strategies for cervical dysplasia. Many women are not aware that there are treatment alternatives to the conventional approach.
The LEEP (loop electrosurgical excision procedure) is the most common form of conventional treatment, once the dysplasia has reached a certain level, with follow up PAP and colposcopy exams at three and six months.
It is a quick treatment, but has the potential to compromise the cervix strength if repeated procedures are required. There is often a high recurrence of dysplasia due to the likely involvement of HPV (Human Papilloma Virus). When the integrity of the cervix is compromised this may result in a reduced ability to carry a pregnancy to term, a feeling of heaviness in the pelvis, and in extreme cases may require a hysterectomy.
In most cases, the conventional treatment protocol does not address the immune system component and therefore recurrence is likely. The new vaccination, known as Gardisil was introduced to address the immune system component and prevent HPV related cervical dysplasia and cervical cancer. The alternative procedure for removing the dysplastic cells involves the use of herbal and vitamin suppositories and a series of herbal escharotic therapies. Escharotic means removing tissue, or sloughing off of tissue. This protocol has been published by Dr. Tori Hudson, ND, who has successfully treated many women with varying degrees of dysplasia.
In addition to removing abnormal cell growth with a minimally invasive procedure, Naturopathic physicians also provide treatments that:
- Help the cervix to heal
- Address the immune system component associated with cervical dysplasia
- Focus on long term strategies for prevention of recurrence
In comparison to the LEEP, escharotic therapy requires more patience and dedication from the patient in regards to time and money. The sessions are 30 minutes and usually take 5 - 8 weeks to complete depending on the degree of dysplasia.
Lifestyle changes involving diet, routine, stress reduction, exercise and habits are required, in addition to taking herbs and vitamins on a regular basis for up to a year following initial treatment.
There is however less trauma to the cervix and a huge potential for the reduction of recurrence and an increase in self awareness and overall wellbeing.
Even if one does chose the LEEP for the convenience, I suggest a follow up with an ND who has a protocol to prevent recurrence.

Dental Prevention for a Healthy Mouth and Body Modern dentistry has been focused on prevention for several decades and the campaign to make people aware and the compliancy of a certain portion of the population has proven that prevention does work. Most people know that regular oral checkups and cleanings along with daily brushing and flossing do prevent gum disease, decay and greatly reduce the risk of dental infections and tooth loss. If tooth loss has already occurred or is inevitable - high tech dentistry can offer many options from removable prosthesis to implantology to reduce the risk of losing vertical dimension (bone loss which causes collapse of the jaw). Cosmetic and orthodontic dentistry has come a very long way in correcting not only dysfunctional dental situations but also dramatically changing a person's facial appearance which can have a huge impact on one's self esteem.
What most people don't realize is that the health of their mouth can also directly and indirectly affect the health of the rest of their body. Loss of vertical dimension in the mouth, as mentioned above can cause all sorts of structural problems and pain in other areas of the body. Jaw pain, neck pain, back pain and even leg and foot pain can be a result of a bad dental situation. Infections (such as periodontal disease) in the mouth can also cause a wide range of health conditions in the body as a result of the bacteria that are present. For example, there is an important correlation between the bacteria found in dental plaque biofilm and cardiovascular disease.

Herb of the Month - Dr. Melanie MacIver
Turmeric or Curcumin
Turmeric has been used throughout India, China and Indonesia as a spice and medicinal agent for thousands of years.
It is a powerful anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-cancer, anti-bacterial, digestive aid and liver detoxifier. It lowers cholesterol, it is healing and it prevents excess clotting. It is also popular as part of anti-aging regimes. It is even more powerful when used in combination with green tea and grape seed extract.
It prevents tumor formation via anti-inflammatory activity, and by increasing glutathione. Glutathione is the body's most potent anti-oxidant, helping the liver clear out cancer causing toxins.
If you are taking warfarin or antiplatelet drugs talk to your doctor before taking turmeric (cooking doses are safe).
Some grocery stores carry turmeric roots. It looks like and is usually sold beside the ginger.
Look for turmeric with grapeseed extract, rosemary, and green tea in our Mediherb product Vitanox for ultimate prevention.
