Dear ,

Anatomy of the Yoga Poses

Julie WS April 2012
Julie's April Workshop

Last weekend 60 yoga students enjoyed a fantastic workshop at Yoga Studio South with internationally-renowned Iyengar yoga teacher and physiotherapist Julie Gudmestad. Among the attendees were another three physiotherapists.

This reflects the strong anatomically accurate and therapeutically beneficial character of Iyengar Yoga. Simply put: BKS Iyengar's brilliant interpretation of the classical yoga poses is both safe and holistically healthful. This is why so many doctors and other health professionals support this style of yoga.

We learned during 10 hours of lecture and practice how to protect the knees, the ankles, the feet and the hips in all the different asanas (poses).

We also heard about the injured people that come to Julie's Portland, Oregon physio practice from other yoga studios in the area where correct alignment is not taught and where people are encouraged to go into poses their bodies are not ready for or into poses that are poorly taught.

This is why, when you come to The Yoga Studio South for classes, you can be confident that, with well trained teachers, many of whom were in the workshop, you will grow in strength, flexibility and calmness with much less risk of injury.

Sincerely,

Ruth, Vic & Rob

"Was this my imagination?" - Catherine Eisner

Iyengar Yoga helping with Rheumatoid Arthritis...
Catherine Eisner
Catherine Eisner: "Each week brought improvements"

I was first diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis in 2007 when I was 33. As a mum of two young boys I was determined to approach my illness with a positive mindset. It has been a long, at times difficult, journey. The first few years I simply tried to eat well and work out several times per week. I managed to maintain a certain level of fitness with cardiovascular and weight training. However, I started to feel increasingly drained by the end of each workout. Sleep was not restful and I awoke each morning with fatigue. Something had to change.

This past November I decided to change my diet to remove foods that cause inflammation and to try Iyengar Yoga, a new form of exercise to me. At first I felt my whole body protest with stiffness, shaking and the usual aches and pains. Surprisingly, within a few short weeks I began to see a wonderful change. I would arrive to Yoga class feeling tired and sore and leave energized and almost pain free. Was this my imagination? Each week brought improvement in flexibility, strength, comfort and mood. I was even beginning to feel better upon awakening! It felt as if my joints were tight and then slowly opened up, allowing blood and energy to flow freely again. The notion that a Yoga class three times a week could be the root of my improvement baffled me. However, after missing two consecutive weeks, I noticed an increase in pain and decrease in flexibility/mood. Subsequently, I became convinced that the search for pain relief and a good fitness routine was over. I was home.

Thank you to The Yoga Studio for helping me on my journey!
