Dear ,
Is Yoga Enough Alone To Keep You Fit?
 | Eric Small, diagnosed with MS at 22, has been teaching Iyengar Yoga since the mid 1960s. Does he ever look fit!
|
According to a well researched article in The Yoga Journal, the anwser is Yes - a committed yoga practice is all you need to stay fit. Click here to read the article. It quotes Senior Iyengar Yoga teacher John Schumacher, who does nothing but yoga to stay well. At age 52, he tested near the top of his age group for a variety of fitness tests, including maximum heart and exercise recovery rates at a physiological testing lab in Gaithersburg, Maryland. His doctor told him that he was in excellent physical condition and estimated that Schumacher had less than a one percent chance of suffering a cardiac event. "Now I have the evidence that regular yoga practice at a certain level of intensity will provide you with what you need." And Jack England, an 81-year-old yoga instructor at the Club Med in Port Saint Lucie, Florida, says more than 30 years of yoga have kept him versatile, wholesome, and sturdy. He has the exact same weight and height as he was in high school, and his outstanding wellness continues to amaze his doctor. An inspiration to individuals of all ages, he says." I do items that a 14-year-old can't do". Namaste, Rob Walker

"Yoga is a miracle to me" - Irene Buckland
|
The kind of story we are pleased to hear every day at The Yoga Studio South . . . .
 | Yoga teacher trainee Irene Buckland: "The miracle of Yoga" | As a child and teenager my passion in life was gymnastics and dance. Like so many young woman who pursue these activities, I developed a hyper lordosis or swayback.
For the first 30 years it wasn't a problem. But when I turned fifty the "wheels fell off" so to speak. I began to suffer back pain and my back would "go out " on me far too regularly. I saw my family doctor and an orthopedic specialist and was prescribed a variety of pain medications ranging from Advil to morphine. My diagnosis was chronic arthritic degeneration of the spine... hypertrophy of the facet joints.
This was made worse by my job in nursing management where I sat in meetings or at a computer for most of my day. I quit my job after three years in search of a more balanced lifestyle that included yoga. I soon realized as long as I practiced regularly, my back would be pretty good and I became more sensitive to early warning signs of a pending back attack and how to ward it off.
I enrolled in the yoga teacher training program so that I could learn more about yoga and know how to do the poses properly.
Slowly, I became less frightened of the potential and actual pain as I knew I had the skills to work through it and eventually be pain free.
Rob suggested that I read "Back Care Basics." It has been a fabulous resource for me as I have learned more about self assessment and engaged in a series of poses and breathing exercises that have left me pain free. What I know for certain now is that as long as I remain committed to the practice, yoga will be my miracle.
