Goodbye to a great teacher
|
 | Rob, Janet and Trish at Janet's last class
|
|
We said a sad goodbye to restorative yoga teacher Janet MacAllan in December as she left to pursue other interests. Janet has done a fantastic job in developing and promoting restorative yoga and yoga for a better back at Yoga Studio South. Fortunately she is replaced by senior yoga teacher Trish Robbins, who already teaches restorative yoga to aspiring yoga teachers in the Yoga Studio College of Canada. Goodbye Janet and hopefully we will see you back subbing occasionally.

Highlights and what is new!
| A quick summary of what's new. . . . New Teacher at the JCC Starting in January Sandy Martino will be taking over Tom King's Sunday classes. Tom has been great in building numbers. Thanks Tom; you're amazing! I am sure Sandy will be as popular as she is at Wellington Square, where she handles the biggest classes.

Dear ,
How to make your New Year's Resolution stick!
New Year is the time when we resolve . . . . to do more yoga, to lose weight, to get fitter, to stop smoking, be nicer to others and a host of other good intentions. Trouble is, research shows 88 per cent of all resolutions end in failure. But research also shows that there are ways to make our resolutions work. We need to:
- Stick to one resolution at a time
- Get plenty of rest and good nutrition to support the part of the brain that powers your resolve
- Practice using your willpower on simple tasks first.
We at Yoga Studio South want to help you resolve to do more yoga in the coming year. For good reason . . . . "Yoga is quite simply the most powerful system of overall health and well-being I have ever seen. . . As preventive medicine, yoga is as close to one-stop shopping as you can find." says Dr. Timothy McCall author of Yoga As Medicine. So we have introduced the Best Value $99 One Month Unlimited Pass. The incentive is that you can save $40 a month on a regular one-month pass by committing to renew it automatically for 12 months! Click here to buy the pass online. Warmly, Rob Walker

Two handy Iyengar Yoga tips
|
To improve your posture, lessen neck stiffness and protect the knees.
Tight muscles on the back of the neck? With this trick, take two straps and to join them make a single large loop, place the strap across your back just below the armpits, take the other end of the long loop over your head and allow it to fall down your back. Adjust the length so that it falls to within a few centimetres from the ground. Put one foot in the loop, straighten the leg and feel the strap pull the shoulders down. Ahhh!! Relief from tight shoulder pain and stiffness. (Make sure the strap falls over the shoulders close to the neck.)
Improving your posture in 10 minutes a day! Let the D ring end of a yoga strap hang over your shoulder and down your back about 10 centimetres. Take the other end down the front of your shoulder, under your armpit and diagonally across your back, over the other shoulder, under the second armpit and loop it to the other end so it is snug around the front of the shoulders and pulling your shoulders slightly back. You can sit at your desk at work like this for a short time each day, training your back to be more erect.

The Power of Movement
|
|
Join Yoga Studio staff member Crystal and past Yoga Studio College graduate, Kim McNeil, in supporting the Power of Movement event on March 4, 2012! This yoga event helps to raise awareness and funds for arthritis and autoimmune disease research. Arthritis can affect a person at any age and yoga is great activity for maintaining a healthy lifestyle, so it's just natural that these two things come together for this nationwide event.
