  Parivrtta Janu Sirsasana

Dear ,

Doctors endorse Iyengar Yoga!
Supta Baddha Konasana
Dr. Karandikar, whose therapeutic yoga centre in Pune, India, helps thousands of patients a week with Iyengar Yoga

I am always amazed at how many medical doctors have been drawn to and written about Iyengar Yoga, created by BKS Iyengar, a genius with very little formal schooling.

Here are some of them for you to check out:

Yoga As Medicine
Yoga As Medicine
These doctors recognize the incredible therapeutic powers of Iyengar Yoga, where props, precise alignment and longer holds empower the body to heal in a holistic way. Apart from Therapeutic Yoga, these books are sold at Yoga Studio South.
I believe, when the yoga fad passes, the solid rationale and benefits of Iyengar Yoga will survive the test of time.

Yoga Student a Great Photographer!

Casey Zayko shares his talents for outdoor shots
Fitzroy Panorama
Fitzroy Panorama by Casey Zayko
In class Casey Zajko is just another student on the mat, working diligently to absorb the benefits of yoga to become more flexible and beat his back issues.

Until he brought us his own calendar to hang on the wall we might never have guessed that this modest yogi is an extraordinary photographer and outdoorsman.
This year's calendar, now in the JCC office, features 12 stunning bear photos, Brown Beartaken in Alaska.

"Nothing beats the excitement of being close to the big, wild predator," says Casey. "The picture of a bear eating salmon was taken at Brooks Falls. Last year we had 55 brown bears around our campground and walking among them safely was a rather exciting challenge."

Casey was born and raised in Poland, studied Anthropology of Culture at the University of Warsaw and arrived in Canada in 1990.

Now he runs a successful house painting business (he painted the Wellington Square studio) and is a coordinator for the Calgary Outdoor Club, participating or coordinating events such as hiking, rock climbing, skiing, biking, volleyball and tennis.

"After developing some lower back problems, it was time to look for another kind of activity that my abused physique would appreciate. So 3 months ago, with encouragement from Rob Walker, I started Iyengar Yoga. It has already produced positive results - I don't have back spasms any more. Oh, and it helps with balance on skis as well," he says.

If you see Casey at the 6.25 pm Wednesday JCC Discover Yoga class, say: "Hello!"

Better sleep has been touted for years as one of the benefits of yoga, but now scientific evidence is beginning to build to support the claims. In 2004, Sat Bir S. Khalsa, a researcher at Brigham and Women's Hospital at Harvard Medical School, concluded a study of subjects with insomnia who were given breathing, meditation, and asana exercises to do over the course of eight weeks. The results showed improvements in both sleep time and quality among the participants.
