Dear ,
Does your yoga practice fall off through the festive season?
| De-stress with reclining bound angle pose |
Ironically the festive season is far from festive for some, including parents stressing themselves out preparing the festivities and buying gifts on top of other demands. Then there are those who find themselves facing depression for a variety of reasons at this time of the year. Happily yoga is a great tonic for stress and depression. Iyengar Yoga has a whole range of restorative poses done with the support of props which calm the nerves and allow you to renew and heal and bring balance back to your life. These poses trigger the parasympathetic nervous system, build the immune system, lower the heart rate and blood pressure.

Sadly many of us let our yoga practice slide at this time of the year as our lives get out of balance and the demands of the festive season overtake us. I recommend you make our restorative yoga classes your priority now and keep coming to these and other classes at least twice a week. I will be teaching a class each day from Dec 27 - 31 at the JCC, so you don't need to miss a day through that holiday week. See you then if not before!

| Vic Lakusta in Supta Virasana, Reclining Hero |
Vic Lakusta, whose main recreation is hunting and fishing, was encouraged to come to yoga by his yoga enthusiast daughter Katherine Lakusta Good. Although he is 73, Vic took to private Iyengar yoga classes with enthusiasm, and embraces every pose with concentration and enthusiasm. He has recruited his rancher buddy, Marshall Copithorne, now also hooked on the benefits of yoga to his body and state of mind. |
MY PERSONAL YOGA JOURNEY. . . | Jo Ann Telfer . . .
| Jo Ann Telfer |
"For a long time yoga was just an exercise class to me, a pleasant alternat ive to my repetitive gym and walking routine. Last year I attended a weekend workshop, and after 3 continuous days of Iyengar Yoga, I had a quiet knowing that it was about to become an important part of my life. Curiosity led me to attend more Iyengar yoga classes, to read about yoga and to start a doing asanas at home. Now after a year of a regular and continuous practice (that is the important part) I am beginning to understand, not just physically, but energetically, mentally, intellectually, spiritually... through all the sheaths of being.... that yoga is a way to integrate my life. Yoga is no longer something I do - it is something I am."
Jo Ann Telfer teaches psychology at St. Mary's University College and conducts workshops to help people manage anxiety and depression. She says: "After many years of lecturing to students and clients that yoga is an effective way to manage depression and anxiety I now advocate it from the heart."
