Misconceptions about yoga

The commonest reason I hear for not doing yoga is that "I am too stiff!" This would be like fearing to enrol for French lessons because "I don't know any French!" There are many misconceptions about yoga. A woman came up to me after a recent talk I gave on yoga and said she had taken one yoga class in her life and had never gone back because everything happened so fast, no one explained how to do the poses and everyone was competing with each other. Now she is inspired to take it up again.  I explained in my talk that Iyengar Yoga was non-competitive and the use of props enabled people of all ages and levels of fitness to do the poses with correct alignment. I told her that holding the pose longer enhanced the benefit and enabled her to find the correct alignment without being rushed. That is what changed her mind.

Cirque du Soleil comes to Yoga Studio South

. . . .Singer seeks out an Iyengar Yoga class

When Cirque du Soleil lead singer Tara Baswani arrives in a new city with the show Kooza, the first thing she looks for is an Iyengar Yoga studio to support her ongoing yoga
Tara Baswani
Tara Baswani of Cirque du Soleil
practice.
Tara fell and injured her back in 2009. Nothing was helping her recover and get back
to work. Finally "after two months and three cortisone shots later, I found myself in San Diego, itching to get back to the stage, and fighting a foot that would go constantly numb, a leg that refused to stay strong, and an L5/S1 disc that bulged its way to severe pain most days."

At her wits' end she called an Iyengar studio and took Iyengar Yoga classes, which had helped her
Tara Baswani 1
recover from an earlier fall in 2000. She was able to get back on her feet again in days. Since that time she has been an avid Iyengar Yoga fan and tries to get her colleagues to take classes too.She recently attended classes and workshops with Margot Kitchen and Rob Walker at Yoga Studio South.

Our Survey Winners!

A record 380 people filled out the survey
Most of you are pretty happy with what we do

Congratulation to Kate Pooley and Gord Dickson who won the ten class passes in our recent prize survey. We were excited to see from the survey that two out of every three survey respondents were highly satisfied with Yoga Studio South classes. A further 25 per cent were somewhat satisfied. Less than two per cent were dissatisfied.
But we are not resting on our laurels. We are carefully reading and digesting the hundreds of comments you made about us and considering ways to do better! If you didn't get a chance to fill out the survey it is still available for a few more days by clicking here.
Some Comments from YSS Students. . .
Your say now . . . .

Heathe
r by email: "I have MS and found the classes extremely helpful to feedbackbuild core strength and balance.  I have only been able to do the "intro to yoga" classes and that's okay. Unfortunately I had to stop as life got in the way.  Things are finally getting back to normal and I am looking forward to returning.  I believe that for people with MS (depending on how aggressive it is) yoga can be VERY helpful.

Thank you for having such great instructors."

Comments from survey respondents:

- We really like the high quality teaching at the JCC. We went to other classes and came back to the JCC because we liked it the best.

- Yoga is one of the events I look forward to each week. I am happy to have discovered it.
- When I first purchased a pass for the Yoga Studio, I was asked why I chose it. I answered, "Well, your location is really convenient for me". I was told, convenience has got nothing to do with it, you come here because we are the best in the city. And you know what, after attending just the discover classes (and purchasing a 1-month pass), you were absolutely right.
- I appreciate the training and expertise that is required to be an instructor at the yoga studios.
- Great classes, very professional but friendly staff. Most instructors take their teaching role very seriously.
- The calibre of the teachers is consistent and high. I like the environment as well and the friendliness of the teachers and staff.
- Best Studio in town.
- The quality of instruction is consistently very high.
- One of the best Yoga Studios in Calgary that I have been to!
- With every sunrise, I look forward to the yoga class of the day and realize how serene and calming it is to be in a yogic state of mind.Thank you and your team of teachers for a blissful yoga experience and I hope to continue practicing it for life.."

Nothing to do with yoga . . .

Do you know who . . .

never heard the word "yoga" and yet coined some 2,000 new The mother tonguewords in the English language and invented the phrases, one fell swoop, in my mind's eye, more in sorrow than in anger, to be in a pickle, bag and baggage, vanish into thin air, budge an inch, play fast and loose, go down the primrose path, the milk of human kindness, the sound and the fury, to thine own self be true, to be or not to be, cold comfort, salad days, flesh and blood, foul play, tower of strength, to be cruel to be kind?

The answer is on page 65 in the fascinating book, The Mother Tongue by Bill Bryson.
