Greetings!
Father Joe Pereira in a Yoga Studio Workshop | Father Joe shows yoga compatible with religious views Yoga is completely non-denominational. And Father Joe Pereira is living proof of this.
This weekend Yoga Studio South has the privilege of supporting Father Joe and his India-based Kripa Foundation - the largest non-governmental organization in India, working among people with chemical dependency & HIV Infection.
We are hosting a meditation evening (which is full) and a two-day Iyengar workshop by Father Joe. Kripa had humble beginnings in a church compound in Bandra in 1981. Now Kripa has spread its work across India with 58 facilities in 18 centres. Its strength lies in eastern disciplines, including Iyengar Yoga and in supporting lifestyle change.
Father Joe, who was a close friend of Mother Teresa, has been coming to The Yoga Studios almost every year since the studios opened in 1996.
Father Joe is not only a Roman Catholic priest but also a senior Iyengar Yoga teacher working with BKS Iyengar for more than 30 years. His charisma and sincere message draw people from all backgrounds to hear his words.

Where did Natalie go this summer? | . . . .She was studying with a world-famous yogi
Natalie with Faeq Biria | Natalie teaches Fusion Wednesday evenings at Wellington Square Here's her summer story in her own words.
. . . .Studying in Blacons, France with Faeq Biria was an amazing experience! I learned so much, and practiced harder than I ever have in my life. It took a few days to get used to the schedule, the long hours of practice and pranayama (breathing exercises), but once I settled, I truly gained some incredible openings, in my body and in my heart. It was very empowering. To be in a big room of approximately 100 people from all over the world, some of these people so advanced in their practice, was very inspiring. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to study so intensely with Faeq, he is incredibly wise and so encouraging.

Yoga Helped Half Marathon
|
Iyengar Yoga made all the difference
"It felt fantastic"
Tracy's finish! |
Former Yoga Studio teacher trainee Tracy Silberer is crediting yoga with her success in her recent half marathon, which she completed in just a little over two hours. "I have been told that is pretty good. I felt ease in my body and breath the entire run. It felt fantastic - in motion, fully present and open to the unfolding of the next stride," said Tracy, who began training in May. "I have been able to increase my running speed and distance with relative ease, injury free, thanks to a daily yoga practice. From that committed practice I developed the physical and mental stamina to complete a longer run. Similarly breath awareness served me well during training and during the race. I was able to stay even and calm with the challenges that arose." Her next race is the Sinister 7 next July in the Crowsnest pass. Tracy teaches two yoga classes a week in Olds, prenatal and a mixed level Iyengar-style class. She regularly attends intermediate classes at Wellington Square.

Some Comments from YSS Students. . .
|
| From Helen, who has just started at Yoga Studio South last week: "I am amazed at how mindful yoga is. I am becoming more mindful -and I like that! From Linda Odbert: For 5 years I had been a member of the Talisman Center but in late 2009 it required a new roof and many classes were cancelled. My daughter suggested I practise at the Yoga Studio South at the JCC, as she was a member. With Iyengar yoga's precise instruction about body awareness and alignment and instructors who would come around and correct me, my abilities have improved. I do miss the social aspect of friends at the Talisman Centre, but am making new friends at the Yoga Studio with each class I attend. |

A Yoga Wedding!
| Trish and Sheila sea kayaking off Nova Scotia. | Wedding bells for Trish and Sheila
After being together for over 17 years, respected yoga teacher Trish Robbins and her partner Sheila Ward will be married on November 20, 2010 at the Unitarian Church of Calgary. "There seems to be an emerging theme of 'dance' for the wedding," says Trish, which is appropriate since Trish and Sheila met at a dance in 1993. Over four hundred of their "closest" friends and family have been invited to dance and celebrate with them. Sheila and Trish have been legally able to marry since 2005, and have now decided to take the 'plunge'. Trish has been teaching classes at The Yoga Studio since 2001 and workshops since 2002. Sheila teaches a humanities course to accountants and is a Certified Laughter Yoga Leader.

Dangers of incorrect alignment
| Seated forward bends
Rita was delighted to bring her daughter Nicole to Yoga Studio South recently. And Nicole's easy seated forward bend really highlighted the need for some feedback on her mother's alignment. (photo on the right). But with a strap and sitting up higher Rita's pose became a lot safer (photo on the left) and less likely to lead to a bulging disc.
