Greetings!
An Iyengar Yoga class doing shoulderstand | Why Iyengar Yoga and why do this style at Yoga Studio South? Over the years I have tried different forms of yoga and used to teach Ashtanga or Power Yoga. But I have stuck with Iyengar Yoga because, for most people it is without question the best option. Check out Chaman's story below for his personal experience. Here's my take:
- Iyengar Yoga is suitable for people of all ages and abilities, who can adapt to postures with ease through the use of props.
- Instruction is clear, systematic and straightforward.
- It is challenging with little risk of injury.
- Many
yoga teachers receive a training of as short as a weekend to three months. At
Yoga Studio South (YSS) our teachers receive a minimum training of 18
months. And for many of us our passion leads us to make a lifelong
commitment to upgrading our skills.
- We train our own teachers and pick the best to teach at YSS.
- Our teachers provide feedback on your alignment and know how to handle injuries.
- The focus on alignment helps build strong backs.
The creative genius of 92-year-old B K S Iyengar was the reason for his selection by Time Magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world. Discover his insights for yourself with the fall class schedule starting September 7.

My Yoga Story |
Chaman Charran
"Back pain much relieved"
Chaman Charran |
Not a week goes by without someone sharing with me how Iyengar yoga has transformed their lives in some way. If you have a story to share, email me by clicking here.
Chaman Charran first started coming to the Yoga Studio South only 10 weeks ago, but already he is excited about the benefits he sees from a regular Iyengar Yoga practice.
"I first came across Iyengar Yoga during the mid-90s when I was seeking relief from extreme pain caused by years of power lifting that left me with a lower back injury and scoliosis. I have always been very active, and aside from power lifting, I did calisthenics, martial arts (Aikido, Judo), Chen Style Tai-Chi, and Chi-Gung. As my back condition worsened, I gave up weight training and martial arts but kept up with Tai-Chi. It was during this time that I happened upon Yoga: The Iyengar Way, by Silva Mehta. I was immediately impressed by the clarity, detail, and precision in the instructions for each pose. Using this book, I began to find immediate relief to my back and was prompted to attend yoga classes in various studios but hardly received even the general instructions of each posture, never mind the subtle details required to achieve the benefits of the practice as contained in Yoga: The Iyengar Way. This spring I was determined to find an Iyengar Yoga studio as I had never visited one and a book on yoga can take a beginner only so far. Since discovering The Yoga Studio in Calgary ten weeks ago I have probably attended about seventy classes and a weekend workshop. The Iyengar-style teachers' constant emphasis on integrity of structure garnered from precision, alignment, and awareness has brought moments of lightness and freedom to areas of my body which have mostly known only pain and dullness before. I have progressed much in these ten weeks and for the first time, I am feeling there's a chance to move beyond pain relief and effect a cure to my back condition."
