Iyengar Yoga "one of the safest forms of yoga" - NY Times
yoga injuries
Yoga Injuries

The Bad News (and Good News for you) from the New York Times!

Many people found their way to yoga as a way to heal or prevent injury and illness: from cancer to back pain. But still people are getting injured in some forms of yoga from pushing themselves too hard, from inexperienced teachers and from big classes with no guidance on how to prevent injury, according to an article in the New York Times last week. It quoted the United States Product Safety Commission as estimating there are some 4,400 injuries a year in the U.S.
But here is the good news from the NY Times: Iyengar Yoga is the exception.
"Injuries can happen with all forms of yoga, but one of the safer approaches is Iyengar, which moves at a slower pace, focuses meticulously on proper alignment and uses props. Iyengar teachers also undergo rigorous training,"  says NY Times writer Lizette Alvarez.
"I love vinyasa (flow) - the breathing, the pace - but it can flow too quickly, and its many Chaturangas (yoga press ups) have sometimes strained my wrists. Since classes are large, adjustments from instructors can be few and far between."
"The most common form of injury is the overzealous student," says Dr. Loren Fishman, a spine specialist, yoga teacher and medical director of Manhattan Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. "The second most common reason for injury is poor alignment, and that is usually crummy teaching."

"Cannot Believe the Benefits"

Nancy Ross
Nancy Ross

Not a week goes by without someone sharing with me how Iyengar yoga has transformed their lives in some way. If you have a story to share, email me by clicking here.

Nancy Ross first started coming to the Yoga Studio South at the Calgary JCC last February. I hear stories like hers every week.

"I simply cannot believe the benefits I have experienced in 6 months.
The first time I felt my shoulders release and begin to really open up was such an amazing feeling!  I was totally unaware of the tension that I was carrying.  At every session there is something new to learn and experience.  The instructors are all simply awesome.  You feel so supported and comfortable regardless of your current level.
I have come to think of yoga like a golf swing.  It may appear simple but there is so much going on.  The feeling of power you experience when you are doing a posture correctly is very satisfying. The amount of energy you are rewarded with is wonderful.   The muscle strength that builds up is an added bonus.  Overall yoga just feels so good.  You can tell you are doing something great for yourself and can actually feel the difference in your everyday activities and posture.
There is nothing more rewarding than challenging yourself and experiencing your own personal progress.  Yoga has given me an inner sense of peace and increased my confidence.
I really appreciate coming to such a clean, comfortable, friendly studio and am very grateful for the expert instruction and knowledge given by some of the best teachers in Calgary.
Thank you Nancy!

Professional Development

Senior Iyengar Yoga Teacher John Schumacher adjusts Rob Walker's feet in headstand
John Schumacher
We pride ourselves at Yoga Studio South on how well trained our teachers are and the ongoing professional training most of them take.
Many attended workshops and teacher trainings with Yoga Journal anatomy columnist Julie Gudmestad and with senior Iyengar Yoga Teacher Jawahar Bangera at our Wellington Square studio earlier this year. Others will attend Father Joe and Margot Kitchen's public workshops at Yoga Studio South in the fall.
I am lucky enough to be just completing a week long workshop with North America's senior Iyengar teachers, Patricia Walden and John Schumacher, who have studied with Yoga Master B K S Iyengar every year in India for more than 30 years. The workshop is at the Featheredpipe Ranch in Montana.
