YOGA FOR MEN WITH TOM KING A BIG SUCCESS!
Tom King
Margot

A group of a dozen or so men - many of whom had never done yoga before - came together for Tom's recent workshop for men only.

An engineer and former business owner, Tom understands the pressures in life successful men face - and the vulnerability that yoga presents them with.

Yoga for Men

Some are now doing regular yoga classes and learning that to succeed in yoga is sometimes not to strive so hard! His workshops will be back in the fall and winter sessions.
Ollie, one of the participants said: "Just wanted to let you and Tom know how much I enjoyed the workshop.
I found the program, sequencing and tempo just about perfect, it was hard in a good way with emphasis on our gender specific challenges in yoga."

Yoga and Meditation Silent Timer

We sometimes want to time ourselves in meditation and yoga - but without that irritating buzzer that can set our nerves on edge!

Here is where our special timer comes in handy. Designed
originally by a U.S. psychologist for behavioral modification, the timer clips to your belt and can be simply adjusted to vibrate at three different levels of intensity  lasting from two to four seconds.

Another special feature is that it continues right on to the next cycle enabling you to do a whole yoga practice without re-setting it.

The timer is available for $60 at Wellington Square.

Why Iyengar Yoga?

There are many styles of yoga out there today - many invented in the last few decades. So, as you find out what is right for you, it is worth having another look at why Iyengar Yoga makes sense for a lot of people:

    * People of all ages and abilities adapt to postures with ease and with correct alignment through the use of props.

    * Clear, systematic, straightforward instruction and corrections by highly trained teachers.
    * Progressive learning.
    * Challenging, but with little risk of injury.
    * Focuses on alignment, which helps build strong backs
    * Maintains your active lifestyle and level of mobility

Because he sets such rigorous standards to qualify to use the term "Iyengar Yoga teacher," his name is not bandied around as widely as some others. But his genius is why Time Magazine chose Iyengar as the only yoga teacher among the 100 Most Influential people on our planet.

My Yoga Story

Brenda Cameron

Healing her back - and her spirit.

Brenda Cameron and daughter Claire
Brenda Cameron

Not a week goes by without someone sharing with me how Iyengar yoga has transformed their lives in some way. If you have a story to share, email me by clicking here.

Here is Brenda Cameron's story:

"I probably drove by the Yoga Studio South sign on 90th Avenue SW almost daily for years, always thinking, I should take yoga. But that was as far as I ever got to a yoga class - until last September when I started suffering disabling back pain.

I finally joined a Discover Yoga class and found that yoga was not only healing my back pain, but it was also healing me emotionally.  Ten months later, my back is not disabling me anymore, but more importantly, I am healing my spirit.  I have a beautiful 14 year old daughter who suffers from a chronic disorder that left her without hair, and with deep inner struggles. There is no cure, but there is now an acceptance for her struggle.  In yoga, I discovered how movement and silence create a strong and healthy inner peace.

Now I don't pass by The Yoga Studio sign, but go in, and practice yoga - creating a depth of healing that I never thought possible.  Much has changed in the last ten months.  I write fewer lists, accept my nearly 50 year old body,  live now, not in the past or future.

The funny thing is that when I started to heal so did my daughter, and for that we are blessed.

Chiropractors Study Iyengar Yoga
Dr. Bohemier in Parivrtta Trikonasana.

Complementary therapies

Drs. Jean Paul Bohemier and Jeff Scholten are taking private yoga lessons with Yoga Studio South director Rob Walker to learn more about the benefits of Iyengar Yoga. And Rob is learning  more about the merits of NUCCA Chiropractic. Both Iyengar Yoga and NUCCA focus on correct posture as a major contributor to overall health.
Without the use of manipulation or instruments, NUCCA doctors re-balance the head and neck. This is done through a gentle and specific contact to the top vertebrae allowing the entire spine to rebalance itself.

Personal Yoga Journeys

dana gemmel
Yoga Studio South student Dayna Gemmel takes a journey to India

India often has a profound effect on yoga students visiting the source of yoga. Here is one person's journey. . .

"When I booked my recent trip to India, I thought that the longest journey would be from Calgary to New Delhi. In fact, the longest journey was from my head to my heart. I planned to travel across the world and practice lots of yoga. In India, I felt "stuck in my head," seeking solid ground, something to remind me of home. I deeply wanted to be in my heart, where feeling grounded comes naturally. So I dedicated myself to regularly practicing yoga and meditation while I was there. Over time and when I returned home, this deeper and committed practice began to quiet my mind and I knew then that this was a gateway to living in my heart. I now know that in my heart is where I truly feel at home and a shift like this means deeply trusting the journey."
