What got you into yoga? My wife practiced yoga off and on for years so I had some familiarity with its benefits. When the Yoga For Men class was offered (several years ago) I decided to give it a try as I wanted to become more flexible to keep up an active life style.
How it is benefiting you? After my first class I felt an immediate greater awareness of posture. The more I practice yoga, the better I feel. I am now much more flexible and I've noticed a big improvement in my core strength. It has helped me stretch out tight muscles after running too.
How many times a week do you come to yoga classes? I usually come about four times per week.
And what advice would you have for others? Anytime is a good time to try yoga no matter what your previous experience. Yes, many poses can be challenging at first for beginners and you'll discover lots of areas that have been neglected over the years, but over time it is quite amazing how much better you will feel overall.
Anything else you would like to say? In every class I have attended there are people at various levels of ability and everyone is made to feel comfortable with the level they are at in their practice. I also appreciate the various teachers that I have had, as every teacher presents things in a different manner and every class has a different focus which helps to keep things interesting.

Nives Vilicic

"My philosophy is to give students as many tools and as much advice as possible to help restore their inner world - to accept and respect who they are, so they can transform darkness into light, and knowledge into wisdom," says Nives. "I am a big believer that everything happens with a reason, so I know that all the people who come to my classes are there to start their inner journey and I need to help them as much as I can."
She started yoga at an early age to supplement gymnastics. "It helped me to focus on my goal, to win as many competitions as I could, and deal better with my everyday stresses." Her original yoga path was with Ashtanga and Kundalini Yoga and from books. But after completing The Yoga Studio College of Canada certification her interest turned to Iyengar Yoga. "My goal is to deepen my knowledge about Iyengar Yoga as an alternative medicine to help as many people as I can on a spiritual, physical, mental and emotional level. | Using a Strap to Improve Posture
Your mother was right! You do need to stand up straight! Good posture is not only healthy for the spine but also for your lungs and heart which are allowed to operate in a larger space instead of within a collapsed chest. Try Rope Jacket to help improve posture. The strap goes over both shoulders as you see in this photo and buckles up at the back. It is tightened just enough to pull the shoulder back slightly. This Year to Big Elbow Trail
Last Year's Hike Was a Big Success!
Last year's Yoga Studio South Hike at Prairie Creek: Photo by Lynne Swenson  | We're having another Yoga Studio South hike this year, this time taking the Big Elbow Trail from the Forgetmenot Pond Campground parking lot at the western end of Highway 66. This trail has great views of Forgetmenot Ridge, Nihahi Ridge and Mount Glasgow and Cornwall - and is flat! Last year about 15 of us went on the first Yoga Studio South hike along Prairie Creek in Kananaskis Country. We had a fabulous time sharing stories and lunch together - and raised money for the Calgary Women's Emergency Shelter. This year's hike will be on Sunday July 11, starting at 9.30 am from Shouldice Arena parking lot on Home Road, just south of 16th Avenue NW. Alternatively you can meet us at the Forgetmenot Pond Parking Lot at 10.30 am. I will be collecting $15 a person donation for the Calgary Women's Emergency Shelter. Sign up at the front desk so we have an idea of numbers.
