Iyengar - a genius but no household name

Iyengar in TriangleThe BBC called him "the Michelangelo of yoga," yet 91-year-old BKS Iyengar - arguably the most influential yoga teacher who has ever lived -  remains largely unknown by the general population, and by many yoga students as well. Time Magazine chose Iyengar as the only yoga teacher on a list of the 100 most influential people; and Yoga Journal says "we wouldn't think of doing a photo shoot without a copy of (Iyengar's) Light on Yoga on the set."

Light on Yoga is the defining work of what a yoga posture should look like and has sold more than one million copies in 20 languages in forty four years.

Iyengar later invented yoga props, now commonplace in many yoga classes, to help correct alignment in stiff bodies. And most yoga therapy owes its insights to Iyengar's genius at healing the injured and sick.

Why then is he more obscure than his reputation deserves? Maybe because Iyengar insists on almost impossibly rigorous standards for official Iyengar Teacher Training. So that for every 1,000 yoga teachers graduating in North America each year from a wide variety of trainings, I would guess there is only about one certified Iyengar teacher.
It's a rule that guarantees the highest standards - but risks his teachings remaining unavailable to many.

Students of the Month

Sharon-Ann and Ken Gray

"Yoga. . .The greatest gift. . ."

Sharon-Ann and Ken Gray

What got you into yoga?

Students of the month for April, Ken and Sharon-Ann Gray,  say yoga is the greatest gift you can give yourself.   "We like a regular practice of yoga, both for the physical and the mental benefits.  Until a person tries yoga, they haven't found who they truly are."
Ken and Sharon-Ann moved into a condo downtown in Oct 2001. They found themselves missing the things they used to do now they didn't have a house and yard to putter in. Sharon-Ann had heard how beneficial yoga was, so she began morning classes 2-3 times a week at Yoga Studio South.
Not wanting to be left out, and noticing the benefits to Sharon-Ann, Ken soon joined her in attending a registered weekly night class. Ken felt more comfortable with having a male instructor.  Nine years later they both really enjoy classes with Margau Perko, who teaches Discover and Level I on Tuesday evenings.

The benefits?

Sharon-Ann enjoys increased flexibility, better balance and ease of movement, while Ken, a seasoned marathon runner in his mid 60's,credits yoga as an excellent opportunity to accomplish the stretching he needs.

Advice for others?

"Our advice to younger folks would be to start Yoga NOW!"
And for those in their senior years, "yoga is a tremendous asset to keeping ones mobility.  The balancing benefits of yoga are so important as we age."

Congratulations Sharon-Ann and Ken!

Teacher of the Month
Vic Mehta

Vic doing MayurasanaVic Mehta, lives the ancient teachings of yoga that arose from his ethnic roots in India. This quiet and always
Vic doing the very challenging Mayurasana (Peacock Pose) on guess who's back?

friendly yoga teacher spends his days studying yoga in every way available to him, from classes to personal practice to absorbing the teachings of different traditions as far apart as Iyengar Yoga and the Self-Realization Fellowship of Paramahansa Yogananda.
Called affectionately "rubber man" by his senior teacher, he is on the tough path to official international Iyengar Certification.
He also studies the ancient language of yoga, Sanskrit, and plays the tabla (Indian drums) in a Kirtan group, chanting mantras to the accompaniment of Indian musical instruments.
You can enjoy the gentle but firm style of Vic's teaching in his Level I class at Wellington Square on Thursday evenings.
Congratulations Vic!

Using Straps to Improve Forward Bends

Prasarita padottanasana with straps One of the biggest challenges to beginning - and more experienced yoga students - is understanding what is happening with the back in forward bends. After all we have no eyes on our back to see what is happening! Here, Kelly is doing a wide legged forward bend called Prasarita Padottanasana with two straps linked together and going across his back and under his feet. This enables him to press into the strap across his back and bring increased awareness to the instruction to 'concave' the back.
Additional benefit comes with the instruction to lift the inner arches and press the outer edges of the feet down.
