Students of the Month |
Fif Fernandes and Hamish Boyd
Hamish undeterred by heart attack

In June last year, yoga teacher Gaylene Fisher, one of Fif and Hamish's Laughter Yoga students, handed them a flyer for Yoga Studio South's Summer Sizzler program. It was a timely invitation to explore quality time and deepen their relationship. After 6 yoga classes in the first week of the Summer Sizzler, Hamish took the five-day intensive with Rob. He realized right away that he "had come home." He decided to take the Yoga Studio College of Canada Teacher Training Program. A heart attack at the end of summer did not deter Hamish. He quit smoking after 40 years and yoga at the Studio became part of his regime in healing and wholesome living. "I have greater vitality, flexibility, and slowly I feel my core strength increasing." Having read the Yoga Sutras and the Bhagavad-Gita in his teens, Hamish feels he is finally stepping closer to Samadhi by integrating the philosophy of yoga into his body.
After Fif was also hospitalized, the gift of life became paramount. "The instructors at the studio are incredibly gentle and knowledgeable. I have had numerous injuries and under their guidance, I can feel my body healing, resulting in less pain and greater peace."
Fif decided to join Hamish in the Teacher Training program. They have been best friends and together for 24 years. Attending yoga classes and doing the Teacher Training has deepened their relationship and through the studio they have met wonderful new friends. Hamish attends 7 classes a week and has taken pretty much all of the classes. As she continues to heal Fif enjoys Discover Yoga and Restorative 5 times a week. Occasionally on Saturday, they attend morning classes and a workshop in the afternoon. "Give yourself the gift of love and life. Commit to your practice. The Yoga Studio is your sanctuary, not a gymnasium. When you push your boundaries and challenge yourself do it gently and with compassion."
Congratulations Fif Fernandes and Hamish Boyd!

Teacher of the Month
|
Sherryn Rault
Sherryn Rault is selected March teacher of the month for her commitment to continued learning, her exceptional teaching and the great feedback for her classes and Critical Alignment Therapy Workshops. "I quite simply love teaching yoga, and for almost 10 years have been blessed to be able to this," she says. "I began practicing yoga as a means to deal with more than 20 years of my own chronic pain. "I remember vividly the moment I realized that the pain that had always been there was gone, even if it was only for a short time." she recalls. These moments became more frequent and more lasting and now she never looks back. "The teacher I strive to be and hope I am, is born from this and from the compassion, the strength and the grace that embodies those teachers that guided me," says a grateful Sherryn. "Now I guide others in this same spirit of service to help find relief from their chronic pain, to regain freedom of functionality in their everyday lives and to assist in a restoration of wellness where they are empowered with the tools of Critical Alignment and Iyengar Yoga to stay pain free." New ideas inspire new possibilities and new possibilities allow for new realities, says Sherryn. Congratulations Sherryn!

Warrior One Using Wall Ropes - and a ropes workshops next weekend!
We have all done Warrior I (Virabhadrasana I) since we started yoga. But doing it on the wall ropes at the Wellington Square Studio enables us to get deeper into the pose with the support of a rope around the waist. Holding a rope in the hands encourages lengthening the spine and open the shoulders for this challenging pose. Many poses can be enhanced in some way using the wall ropes. The ropes, a characteristic of Iyengar Yoga, were likely first introduced by BKS Iyengar's teacher Krishnamacharya last century, according to Calgary yoga teacher and author Norman Sjoman, Krishnamacharya likely adapted them from a former British naval gymnasium in Mysore, India, which he used as a yoga studio. Discover for yourself how yoga ropes can intensify and allow deeper access into your favorite yoga poses in a workshop with studio director Rob Walker! This workshop is suitable for students who have been practicing yoga for at least 1 year. Click here to get more details and to register.
