Issue: #19 February 2010

Greetings!

good posturebad postureI recently wondered how I could tell that a man walking in the far distance was aged. The answer I realized from afar, was posture. Many of us believe it inevitable that as we grow older we will grow shorter and our backs will round like the man in this picture on the left.
Older people I see in the gym working on strength and aerobic capacity may not realize that Iyengar Yoga, with its emphasis on alignment and a healthy spine, could, with a regular, lifelong Iyengar yoga practice, help prevent that very distinctive characteristic of aging, the stoop, the head thrown forward and the slumping frame.
For more information on yoga and posture check out this article on posture in the Yoga Journal by Julie Gudmestad, who is teaching a workshop at the Yoga Studio South April 23-25.

Student of the Month

Jack Dickson
Jack Dickson
When I asked the Yoga Studio Staff to come up with a recommendation for student of the month it didn't take a second for Yael and Deanna at the JCC Yoga Studio to nominate Jack Dickson.

"He's always such a pleasure to chat with, he's always smiling and I can see he works very hard in the classes he takes," says Deanna.

"He is very devoted to being here and making time for yoga even with his curling schedule.  A very pleasant man, soft spoken and kind," adds Yael.

Jack jokes that he got into yoga because his wife made him go! "Well, not really, but she had been going to the Yoga Studio for several years, and we both thought it would be something we could do together," he says.
But he quickly saw the benefits for himself. Coming two or three times a week keeps his body flexible and free of injury enabling him to continue participating in the curling and golf he likes as well as other physical activities like gardening and house maintenance. He notices an improvement in breathing (which helps his participation in a choir), relaxation and positive mental focus.
This isn't the first time Jack has tried yoga. "I did yoga about 20 years ago, and frequently hurt myself.... because I didn't do it right, had poor alignment or tried too hard.  So I particularly benefit from being able to use the various supports encouraged in Iyengar Yoga as taught at the Yoga Studio.
"A major reason that I'm enjoying my experience at the Yoga Studio, is that the teachers are well trained, know what they're doing, and are effective as instructors."
Jack realizes that many men are missing out on a good thing.  "Although more men are doing yoga nowadays, there are still a lot more female than male students," he says.

Congratulations Jack!
Teacher of the Month
Sandy Martino

Sandy MartinoSandy Martino is gracious, humble and an excellent yoga teacher, which is perhaps why her classes are consistently the largest at Yoga Studio South.
Sandy herself says she likes watching students overcome the physical and the mental  limitations that usually exist within themselves  "and people learning to pay close attention to themselves, becoming aware of themselves."
"A practitioner must learn to become steady, maintain stability and let go of resistance  at the same time," she says. " I love to be a catalyst as a teacher, inspiring students to continue to deepen their practice until this philosophy  penetrates their lives."
Sandy began reading spiritual literature when she was twenty and has been devouring it ever since.  The physical part of her practice began in 1997, and she took the Yoga Studio College of Canada teacher training in 2000.
"I continue to study as much as possible with our senior teachers, and practice every day (which isn't always easy in hotel rooms!) I hope to be teaching until I am very old! Maybe until my last Savasana!
Her dream is to move to a warm country and teach from her own studio to people who do not have as much access to Iyengar yoga as we do here.  "Somewhere near an ocean would be ideal!"
With weather like Calgary's I think we could all handle that!
What are those unusual props for?
sand bags Sandbags have many uses in Iyengar Yoga. They are used to increase the effect of gravity on the back in seated forward bends, on the hips, hands or shoulders in Savasana (You will love that!), on the thighs in Baddha Konasana (bound angle pose ) and on the feet in Viparita Karani (legs up the wall). That's just for starters.
Slant Board
Wedge Boards or Slant Boards are placed under the back heel in poses like Virabhadrasana I (Warrior I) or Parivrtta Trikonasana (Revolved Triangle) when you cannot get your heel to the floor. They are also great under the wrists  in Adhoa Mukha Svanasana (Down Dog) or Adho Mukha Vrksasana (Hand Uttitha MarichyasanaQuarter RoundsBalance) to protect or support sore wrists.

Quarter Round Blocks are used under the front of the foot to stretch tight calves or under the front foot in Triangle to prevent sore legs or intensify the pose. They are also used to level the hips in Uttitha Marichyasana (standing twist) as in the photo on the left. See Yoga: the Path to Holistic Health for a description of this pose.

All these props are available for use in the studio at Wellington Square and for sale at either studio.
